Well, I'm going to weigh in here and I will most likely be pounded through one of the brick walls. You bought this house and obviously are enamored with the unique aspects of it. That said, I personally think you should embrace that thought and take time to understand the intent behind the design. I see certain aspects that are brilliant. I see other things that were left unfinished. The hood is the craziest creation I've ever laid eyes on. I wonder how it feels to someone who is actually standing in front of it. It most likely has a different vibe there, in the moment and is most likely not very photogenic. It does appear to hover and loom. I wonder if that is really the case. I wouldn't do a thing until I either understand it, embrace it or ultimately decide it is not for you. It's interesting that you are so quick to make changes. So first, take the time to understand how you feel about the design. If you can embrace what you have, then it could be great fun to make changes in back splash and/or wall color(s). That you want to paint the cabinets, gives me pause. There's nothing wrong with the cabinets. The only aspect of the design you need to be certain about is the hood. Do not attempt to alter by changing the artist's intention. Doesn't work. You either move forward and finish what remains unfinished in his/her work, or you start over....completely! I could make this the best hobbit kitchen on the face of this earth. It would cause everyone to exclaim with glee, "I never seen a hobbit kitchen before!". I think it is a hoot and such a departure from all the vanilla that is visited upon us day in and day out. Good luck with your new house.
