Grazius---do you know the name of the yellow paint in the dining room? I'd like to compare it to the BB and those I listed above. It is important when pairing colors, that there is enough contrast in both color as well as value---otherwise it will look "off".

How about a rich brown or black sofa?

Anokasams, They do have a dark brown and several dark grey fabric samples but my living room is small so I felt it should be more monochromatic. Thank you.

groveraxle, thanks for the samples! I am leaning towards the lighter color. My little cairn terrier is exactly the background color of the rug. I asked her if she could be a throw pillow for the couch. haha How did you do that on the pictures, please? Great tool.

I wouldn't go with a lighter color on a sofa unless you have a child free home. The lighter colors tend to look "dirty" after a year or so. Have you thought about blue?? Or a rich brown??

Maybe going light isn't such a good idea if this is your plan for throw pillows.

I think a rich brown would look great, but I like the camel over the light!

I have a similar carpet. We have a pair of dark brown leather sofas and a light gold color fabric on a side chair. It works well.

BC, is quite yellow, not sure how it will look paired with the BB as it could turn bright and appear fluorescent. As for the sofa, the lighter one is the "safer" choice with the two different wall colors. Keep us posted & Good Luck!

Creative Touch - No, I don't have children but I do have two small dogs. I also have a wonderful, very large throw cover for the sofa which is washable. I plan to put plastic over the seat cushions, too, at least when I don't have company.

ebeaty91360. I also have a light gold side chair. But, seeing as my living room is so small, I did not want a great contrast in colors.

Natalie - I painted a small portion of a living room wall with the BB. It does appear colder than BC and it goes with the rug and the BC of the dining room. Tomorrow, I will paint a larger area and see how that looks. If that fails, then I am once again, at a loss. Looks like I can't have it all until next year when I do the whole first floor.

This is not Archie Bunker's house! No plastic on the sofas! Please! I prefer the idea of darker furniture, or a color from the rug! Green?

Mainstreetshool - I respect your comment on the plastic covers but I do have dogs and they will lick their feet and drool, etc. No one will ever see the plastic and my mind will be at ease. Thanks for your input.

Thank you, that room is beautiful. However, there were no red samples in the pack of fabric samples I received from the sofa company. There was only "port", a dark red, which I felt was too dark for my small living room.

Looking at the picture by groveraxle, the lighter sofa gives the rug more life. I have a white sofa and two cats and three dogs and lots of relatives and the sofa is just fine. Go for it.

The camel is too dead looking.

I like the camel color, not the lighter one. The lighter color jumps out too much and does not complement the rug, but if walls were light maybe it would work. I am no pro so I look to the pros for their input.

With painting your walls beige, it may just be too much beige so I prefer the Jute. I have an ivory couch but we didn't think we were going to get another dog (and cat) when it was purchased. We have to keep it covered as we use the living room all the time (and so do the animals), but the only time I see it is when we have company. All that to say, make sure you are ok living with a covered couch.

Too much beige for my taste :) Unless you paint at least one wall red to make the sofa pop.

Janet Holmes -- One thing I love about leather is it is great for dogs, cats and other household creatures (like husbands who love to spill while watching TV). It is easy to wipe off with leather cream conditioner/cleaner.

The red sofa suggestion is awesome!

If you want everything beige, go with camel. The lighter color provides more contrast, thus more interest. You may want to paint with the lighter color to allow the rug to be the star of the room. Please add some darker colors in accessories or you will end up with a dead room.

I personally love a navy sofa. It is different but still can be a neutral in a room and be traditional and modern, so if your style changes over time. I would check out Room and Board, they have a wonderful selection of "ink" colored fabrics and are reasonably priced and superior quality. We went with a navy sofa for our space and I'm so glad we did.

Great room, but it is huge. Grazius has a small area so she wants it monochromatic. She is going in the right direction for her situation. Is it possible for you to use the same color for the living room as is in the dining room, grazius?

No, the living room, the dining room and the foyer are painted in Behr Banana Cream. This yellow is much too lively for the rug. I figured I would do only the living room in BM's Bronzed Beige, which is a cooler version of the same kind of yellow. It will complement the dining room and foyer and make the living room feel more important and formal because it is a little darker. It will complement the rug because it is a pretty good match in tone. I chose Jute colored fabric for the sofa. The living room is 11X13 - very small and the three rooms are right on top of each other, being defined by wide archways. Here is a pix of my messy living room. The pix is taken from the foyer which leads into the living room and the dining room is to the left. I bought the end table on the left for cheap and found the blonde version of the same table in the alley. I am going to have the blonde one refinished to match the darker one. There is a cherry color TV armoire on the wall across from the sofa.

The light coming in the room is amazing. Glad you went with the lighter sofa. It will give you the same feel as the sheet and not compete with the wall color. I don't think the tan would have worked with the paint. Never know what you can find in an alley. Thanks for posting the photo. Now we know what your space looks like and can better help you bring it together. Are you wanting suggestions for the pictures on the wall? What does your sofa look like?

I really like your rug.

Here is a photo of the sofa from the website I bought it from. Keep in mind that it will be done in Jute colored cut velvet which will soften it a bit. I have a victorian house so I wanted something more modern/transitional for the sofa. I also thought it would go well with the deco end tables. The rug will be victorian. I am always drawn to classic style.

BTW, the wall color you see is banana cream. It will be re-painted in bronzed beige, which is almost equally beige and yellow but it is darker and cooler that what's on the walls now.

Yes, I know I need to pull the wall behind the couch together. I will have to make it a point to get out there and collect some small art work. I like the examples you gave very much but I think they are too contemporary for this room. I do get the idea, though as to arrangement. The ceilings are nine feet tall so it will be a challenge.

Sylvia, thanks. You are correct that ideally, the wall color should be cooler. However, I can't repaint the whole first floor at this time of year so I am making a compromise now to find a color paint that will match the dining room and foyer while blending with the rug. I think the BM bronzed beige will do that for me. Next year, I am going much cooler with the paint!

With your rug as the piece to work from and your wanting to stay monochromatic look at pictures on Houzz. I envision a look with some of a leopard print added in a small way. Caramels and medium dark woods would lend itself to a very cozy room, in my opinion. A little of a soft green added might be nice.

Sandradclark - Thank you. The rug is beautiful but I noticed last night that the colors were much warmer and the rug looked almost red. Guess I'll try some of those "cool" light bulbs.
I will post a pix when it is done but I won't get the sofa until mid-December.

Silvia - Thanks for the great app. I need all the help I can get. Getting the rug changed everything as far as wall colors go. It was much cooler than I had anticipated. So, it's time to re-paint anyway and that's for next year.

Bevgallew - I do have caramel and medium dark woods and am looking for a print chair. I have looked at pictures on Houzz and that was helpful. I would also like to use some wonderful wine colored upholstery fabric I have from a few years back. Now to find an old chair that needs reupholstering! So much attention to detail in this process.
