Is this Blue too bright??

So I redoing my old wood dining chars. I'm only doing one because I'm not sure it looks very good. Does this color combo work? Does it look good or should I have gone with a duller blue? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well, if you are willing to change both the paint and the upholstery ... take a big step back and try to envisage what you want the entire space to look like. Then you make your decisions based on that. It's my bedtime where I am, so I look forward to more comments in the morning. All things are possible.

(As for the brown, grey ... the joys of computer monitors. I see the espresso now. Super, you can do a whole lot with that. As for the kitchen cupboards, I still don't see them!)

Let's start with your ideal room ... ? Do you like the bright blue colour? do you want a room that works with that, rather than with the upholstery? Okay, I've just had a look at your ideabook and see someone who loves light and colour, strong, elegant, not bitty. So maybe it's a matter of new (solid colour) upholstery and playing with the rest of the room using the blue as inspiration. There's a wall there desperate for art, for instance. How about creamy yellow curtains? Big container plants?

Way to blue for me. I guess I would need to see the whole room though to make a final call. How about the grey of the table base and stain the other wood dark like the top of the table? Are you mixing?

Hi---I love the blue! The fabric is a bit dull. I recommend moving forward with the blue paint, changing the fabric, and adding a centerpiece. Here's some ideas. Hope you find it helpful. Good Luck!

I love Natalie's fabric but it would look better on a darker blue for a more richer look.

I know some of these pictures can be deceiving because of the lighting but I used Rustoleum Satin Sapphire.

If I am going to switch my blue color, do I just reprime and repaint or do I have to strip all of the paint??

I don't think it's necessary to strip the paint and if you go with a darker blue you probably don't even need to re-prime.

I like the blue and the fabric and I think the first comment by Jeanie was spot on. You just need to repeat the blue in at least two other spots around the room (art on the wall, bowl on the kitchen counter for example) to tie it all in.

The oak cupboards in kitchen and wall and floor colors seem to have a softer feel so I would repaint in a muted grey or blue or even white and also to work better with your fabric. If keeping the blue, I would go softer and suggest a fabric that compliments and bring in more of that blue with accessories for a coordinated look. Should also consider how your dishes are going to work with the chairs. houzz=

I'm coming late to the conversation, to vote on the side of a "smoky" blue -- sounds so much better and more accurate than "grey-blue" doesn't it? I think the difficulty is that the upholstery is theoretically black and white, and should be great with a bright colour. But it's not really black and white, it reads as a variety of greys. So the bright blue overwhelms it and has a different feel.

I hope the pics below are useful -- sorry I haven't done a full chair, but recolouring the mesh is impossible with my software. As you have it, and smokier.

I agree it's the fabric that doesn't go. Are you keeping the table black? then get a fabric with blue and black in it.

I don't know if everyone else is seeing a pic I'm not getting, but all I see of the room is the table, and the fabric is great with that. I see a dark brown top and grey legs. Oh, wouldn't it be nice if we could all be gathered together passing pics around so that we knew what we were talking about? By the way, Ipldalmeida, I love the chairs.

Haha, Rina, I thought I was losing my mind! I see an espresso brown table and legs and NO kitchen cupboards as mentioned above. Maybe lpldalmeida can set us straight?

I am not sure what some people are seeing with the brown top and grey legs?? I uploaded 2 more so hopefully you can see that I just have an all brown/espresso dining table, no grey. the two chairs you see are my before and after. I only painted one because I wasnt sure about the color combo. I think I need a darker blue. I may change the fabric too. its more newspaper color than I thought. we just moved in so there is literally no decor yet at all in my dining space.

The chair is cool- it would go best in a modern space with white walls/type look. Depends on how you work the look :)

The small shot of the cupboards are in the first pictures - third one over. I had mentioned (along with wall and floor color) as a reference in considering a softer shade that may work better with all three components in this open concept room.

Thanks Rina for you're input. I do love the color but I'm ok with other blues. The fabric is the hardest to change because we already paid for it and there are no refunds on a special order. So we could get new fabric but it would cost us. Im willing to change my blue. Our main idea was to have the chairs have a pop of color. My table is 68 in in the picture but can extend to 102in! I really love it. We are renting this condo and we are allowed to paint the walls but we'd have to paint them back before we move out so I feel like thats a big waste of time and effort seeing as we are only here a year. Everything is oak in the room (the kitchen cabinets and the wood trim) I hate oak but can't do anything about it unfortunately. So i'm in a dilemma where I want a bold colored chair but don't want to have it throw off the entire space. Whats your advice on chair color?

Depends what look ur going for. I like that blue but are u keeping the table in its present color? If yes, then I don't like the blue against the table. If ur going coastal I think a lighter blue would be better, the present blue reminds me of southerwestern/Mexican décor (if that's what ur going for)

Just to chime back in, I think you've received enough "the blue is good" comments to conclude that it's a personal preference. The color is bold so it's natural it would be too much for some. At this point, I think you can safely keep it if you love it without fear that you're committing a crime against design :)

smoky goes well with the brownish table & floor colour....
If the table was white in colour then the bright blue would look great...
Both chairs in smoky blue should be fine..
And a rust/ redish wall art would definitely add oomph!

Or you could go with a color like the cushion on the other chair a light muted blue green. Hope this helps.

Guess I am seeing something different as well.... I love the blue and the fabric - it is interesting and conversational... I think it can all be pulled together beautifully when you finish the space... get more of the material and make a table runner or place mats ( or find a coordinating material to anchor the color ) and edge it in a trim to match the chairs... change the color of the walls and get some sort of art pieces on the walls or a nice photo gallery and incorporate either frames or some mats in that blue color.....

Thanks everyone. After taking in everyone's advice and getting some of my family and friends advice I think its definitely a case of personal preference. To be honest I love my chairs exactly the way they are! There totally out there and a great conversational piece so I'm gonna go bold and keep them. Can't wait to post a photo of the end result when we get it all put together :) Act One Designs- Yes its an open concept dining/living/kitchen and unfortunately a challenge because its a small space. But I think I can make it work :)

Yes, yay you! You're there, it's your home, and if it's singing for you then it's singing. Such fun to tie it in with a touch of blue in the kitchen, maybe art in the dining room that picks up the colour -- but I'd say just in a small way, because you still want your chairs to be the statement, and if the room's full of blue they won't be. I'd love to see an update when you're ready. Nice discussion.

Glad you decided to stick with it. Honestly, I'm not a big fan of blue, but that color commands attention and livens up the space---I think this room is going to turn out Great. Post pics when you're finished. Good Luck!
