This is basaltina.....a natural stone, volcanic material, "basalt"....each stone supplier makes different names for their products, so it may have a different name depending on where you search for it. We have used it frequently and clients love it. Although it is a natural stone, it gets a slurry applied to it before it arrives at the stone warehouse which seals up any natural pits, wholes, making it very durable and more stain resistant.

What is the counter made out of and can it be used for flooring in a house in Puerto Rico (tropical situation.)? thanks.

i have not seen this stone available for flooring. i would think it would be too soft and too porous for a floor. but it doesn't mean it's not our there? i've just not run across it. i would not advice one of my clients to use as flooring.

no, not at all. we have used it on several counters over the past 10 years and have had no problems. the countertop would not get as much traffic as a floor; not as harsh of traffic.

We are thinking of doing the same stove and hood set up with the hood in front of a window. Does the ceiling mounted hood only work because the counters are deeper than typical? Being told we will need to do a custom hood?
