OR get a larger area rug for the living room and spread out the furniture to include the floor space between the dining and living room.

Lyn- I’d love to expand the living room as you suggest but the front door is directly across from the blank wall space. We’ve tried and it just creates an awkward traffic pattern.

Yes you have seen this space before. I started with a cabinet there and had asked in this site about color. Several commented that the cabinet was too hefty for the space, so I am removing it.

Maureen- I like the idea of a mirror. However, the front entry door is directly across from that wall and as I understand it, that’s bad feng shui.

If this space is the first thing visible from the front door I’d find a significant piece of artwork that I absolutely loved. Original if budget allows.

Yes. You are correct about the Feng Shui. A mirror would be nice there, and I thought of that, too. But no can do since the wall directly faces the front door.

Art would be nice. My view is don’t put anything there until some type of artwork inspires you to put it there.

Another thing you could consider, since it is right across from your front door, is putting a pedestal with a flower arrangement. I did that in one of my places for many years. And I think this could possibly work well in that spot, next to the column, and adjacent to the dining room.

One option might be a wood pedestal or plant stand.

I don't think the front door opening into the space is an issue with opening up the living room.

You are merely use to a straight path into the home from the front door.

Putting a chest or console to the right of the front door may be a welcoming addition to the space that you haven't given much thought to. Something to look at before you look beyond to the dining room.

Since it’s in a main traffic area and right by the entry, I’d probably keep things pretty simple rather than filling the wall with a gallery.

I think one larger piece of art could work really well here, especially something with a bit of texture or dimension. It would give the wall some interest without making the walkway feel crowded.

If you have enough room, another option could be a slim console or floating shelf with a mirror or piece of art above it. Since it’s close to the coat closet, you could even use a small basket underneath for shoes, bags, or other things you tend to grab on the way in or out.
