KEEP THEM! I love them, they are amazing. If you're working with a designer and/or architect who is urging you to keep them, listen! They will keep your aesthetic while preserving the unique beauty of your house, and it will be awesome.

Keep them if you are torn. That way you won't be sorry because you can always change them down the line. What a fun project!

Sorry, I couldn't read all the posts to this so I hope my response is not a "re-hash". I did see that this is a cabana bath (by the pool). I really think you should have "fun" with this bathroom. Go ahead and keep the turquoise and play off the 50's colors of turquoise and black. Those two colors with some white thrown in "pop"! I'm thinking white subway tile and a white counter top and paint the cabinets a flat black. For the floor tile use the basket weave black/white tile or the old (now new) penny tiles. You can add all kinds of fun art work of the tropical variety! Throw up a pretty white shower curtain and some clean white towels... and wah-lah, you'll have a bathroom to die for! P.S. Do change out that window for a fresh clean one... maybe use a matching curtain or film the window depending on the privacy you need in there. Please post pics when you are done!

You can keep them and create a unique look or replace them with white---just like everyone else... I have a 1961 bathroom that I adore, and it gets a lot more compliments than the one that I had to gut (huge water damage) and renovate. My vote is definitely to keep the turquoise.

For resale value I would ditch them.But if you don't plan on reselling, then, if you like it for sure keep it!

Keep and match the pool liner to them! It will be a fab MCM duo!

If you are planning on staying in the house then keep the fixtures. If you plan on selling in the near future, replace them. That's a real estate broker' opinion. Only certain people will like the old fixtures.

Will you be able to have the countertop you want with that sink? Looks like a metal rim. I don't think that could be undermounted. If you like the color, I say keep them. But if not, it will probably be more trouble than it's worth to try to save them.

If you lived in Europe this would be a no-brainer. They keep everything and that's why Americans pay big bucks to go and visit old architecture.

I almost can't believe that I am saying keep. So much of what is shown on Houzz in beautiful but not unique. You are an opportunity to have both. Those fixtures have charm. You can make it casual or elegant, beachy or modern. Post photos when you are done.

I would totally keep the fixtures. The color is beautiful and remodeling to add a lot of white and a little black, along with a different vanity and removing the shower door would look amazing. Me, I'd use bright towels to add variety (orange, light green, or fuchsia), but that might be too much color for you. Also, it's possible to find replacement toilet seats in vintage colors.

Keep, keep and keep! Do you know how difficult it is to find MCM fixtures in good condition?! I had a client who wanted to change her newly remodeled bathroom with a fifties retro look and it took us forever to find the right fixtures and when we did - they were very expensive. And you don't have to go all white to go with the fixtures either.

Wow! I love them. I would almost buy a house based solely on those fixtures! Such Character!!! I would make them the focal point and I think some matching glass tiles someplace would be amazing.
The rest of the room needs to be very understated and soft complimentary colors.

Pretty certain I'll keep them...I could always switch them down the road if I ever change my mind. Firm believer that we regret more what we didn't try in life that what we did (even if we later realize we made a mistake). Very inclined to go all white (wall, floor, cabinet) just to keep the look very clean and fresh (pictures bellow). Your suggestions are so valuable and I can't be more grateful...feeling very excited to see the changes!

Love the white! Agree it will look clean and fresh. Plus it's a blank slate so if you have to replace an item in the future, you won't have to worry about it standing out. Please post photos when you finish!

Make drawings or 3-d renditions of what the bathroom will look like with a new color scheme, floors, cabinets, window- everything. I always have to "see" it before I know if I'll like it. If you're still not sure, you could give it a shot and if you don't like it in real life, you can replace them in the future. And don't forget to trust your gut. Even if a vivid color scheme would look great, maybe that's just not your style.

People are paying big bucks for new versions of coloured fixtures right now save the money and keep the great colour you have, if you're unsure then just replace the toilet with a white one and keep the tub and sink

Change the floor and countertop paint the cabinet black or dark charcoal, paint the walls and make everything else in tones of grays and it would look stunning !!!!

i like the idea of painting cabinets black. gray wall no and no. love the wall white. floor could be black and white 50's tile. you have myriad options. turquoise towels and maybe a pop of yellow. it's sallie newman again. omg i can not wait to see the final product.

When I read your question posted on top I get the feeling that you were planning to makeover the bathroom completely. But since your architect told you he loves the items you've started to hesitate?
Point is: do YOU love these items? Did you have a makeover in mind with these items? Don't go for reselling or MCM reasons, go for what you like.
If it's a matter of budget I can imagine you are considering reuse. Good luck!

Monique is right... if you'll never truly be happy with the older fixtures, then by all means don't use them - BUT try to remove them intact, I'm guessing you could resale them for a "pretty penny" if they are in good shape. Check out Craig's List or your local "Treasure" stores to see what they might bring. At the very least, donate them to someone who will love them.

I agree with Monique and emjfla.... It is YOUR home, if you do not love them then replace them! I would have them removed and resell them, if they are in good condition, someone will buy them!

Monique, good advice. Yes, I was torn but definitely more inclined to keep them than not to. It would have been less challenging to modify the bathroom in its entirety, for sure, but at the end, keeping those fixtures and making the space work around them will be immensely more rewarding. I will certainly share some pictures here of the final space!

I would keep. The colors that would coordinate with the fixtures are being shown everywhere for every room. Change the floor and the sink top and your bathroom could be absolutely gorgeous.

Keep them ! Change the rest to white .White and turquoise ,very beautiful and unique .

You just bought the house , why worry about resale value.

You can actually have them refinished. If you want to keep them maybe you could change the shade to a more modern tone. If not I'd still consider having them worked on just to give it a new look again!

I vote to Keep Them! I love the nostalgia and build the rest of the design around those fixtures.

Maybe, just maybe, if you change floor and counter top it may work, but only for a little while since it will probably never be what you really want it to be.

Keep, keep, keep! And not just for a fun pool bathroom, but for RESALE VALUE. Lots of people are looking for MCM homes now, and especially the ones with the cool, original MCM fixtures. A MCM home is much less attractive to many people if it's been "updated" to look 21st century. If you search on "retro renovation" or "mid-century modern" you'll find cool websites entirely devoted to restoring your MCM home and respecting its history and architectural character. Please don't make it plain vanilla!

I'd keep them IF you can use the sink as an undermount. I am not a fan of the huge flange all the way around it. I would lose all the brown and gold in the room.

My mom built a house to be pleasing to the eye, got everything she wanted. Went to all these fancy shops, and I can tell you now that from memory, that whole house visually looks like crap today. Its quality built, but so very dated, and not in a good way. These fixtures arent that bad. They avoid the real easter eggy colours I usually see, and quite like this darker tone you have. Keep the pieces and decorate to accomodate. Professionals can give valuable opinion and visualize in ways consumers may not be able.

By using the existing fixtures, you can save money to invest in other areas of the room. Buy higher quality than you normally would with the money you saved. Adding quality to quality will never hurt IME. In the amount of time it takes for the existing colour fixtures to grow on you, your "ideal" design may lose its appeal, and you will be left still wanting a change.
