Hang mirror the other way to see your face.

Happyleg, I tried turning the mirror the other way and it just didn't look quite right. Do you think it is too small in this direction?

A little, but might work with 2 tall lamps.

I love the idea of this dresser working in your foyer space this way....so practical and a decor piece, too!

I like the direction you have placed the mirror. Do you have several larger books you could place under the lamp to make it a bit taller to work with the height of the mirror?

I found a lamp on 1stdibs today (dream source and a real splurge!) I will hopefully get it. It is taller than the one in this photo. Regardless, I decided I should return this brass one. Once I get a new, slightly taller lamp, I will see if it works with the existing mirror, or if I should look for a different mirror too. I'll post pics of a new lamp when I get it. I'd love more feedback from you guys.

Try the mirror off center, enough so it looks planned. Then put the lamp on the other side but not clear to the end. I love this dresser, it should be shown off. If you can't get the placement right try 3 or 5 small (tiny) prints matted and framed in different frames. The lamp can sit slightly in front of the prints. It adds interest.

The mirror will be too wide for the chest if horizontal, so leave vertical. You might lift the lamp on some stacked hard back books.

UPDATE:

We returned the brass lamp and purchased another one that I adore,which is in the picture below. I think it is a better size and adds some color and history: It is made from a WW1 bomb shell with armistice date etched into the shell and a brass band along the bottom with the biblical quote about turning swords into plowshares.

I plan to hang the mirror on the wall but stacked it on books for this picture. I wish the mirror were a bit wider, but I am still going to use it because I already own it and am tired of shopping. Plus, a new mirror could only be a tad bit bigger so as not to hit the light switch on the wall. Sandradclark, I like your idea of hanging other pictures around the mirror as well. I will have to play with that idea. And thanks for the compliment on the dresser, I got if for $40 at a junk store and dig it too.

QUESTION:

I had this lampshade in the basement and just stuck it on this lamp. Does it go well or should I get another one in a different size or color?

That dresser looks soooo pretty with the chair right there. Nice job on such a special lamp, too. I think the shade looks like it is the right size for the base and the color works, too, right?

I like what you did in photo #2 but I could still see two skinny tall lamps with smaller shades on either side of the mirror instead of the one lamp. It would look more symmetrical & add height to balance out the mirror height. Also, don't worry about blocking the light switch on the left. Just pull both skinny tall lamps a bit forward on the dresser. By going with two tall skinny lamps on either side it will fill in the wall space on either side of the mirror as well & pull everything together.

Perhaps something for the Christmas season;)

We are Jewish yet my father is obsessed with A Christmas Story and would be thrilled if got the leg lamp. Me... not so much so.

I am now considering purchasing a different mirror. I have found a few Louis Phillipe gilded mirrors. I attached a picture of one of them. They are all a bit wider than the current wood mirror. The gold tones would pick up the metal of the lamp.

Plus, I think this corner of the room is becoming a bit too Americana, 1920s, crafty. I like the look in moderation and sprinkled about. However, I think it is getting to be too much all in this corner and is clashing with the rest of the room that has high ceilings, a fancy marble fireplace, and lots of original 1850's molding and floors. I like eclectic and think I need to make this corner a bit more eclectic by throwing in something older and more gilded looking.

Thoughts?

How about a round mirror of that antique style by hanging 6-10 inches from picture wire on a decorative hook. The round mirror may do away with your lamp blocking some of the mirror? The lamp shade you found isn't bad but I'd keep looking. Check my moms attic and storage closets...she has hundreds. Lol

I would hang the mirror sideways and get a slightly larger lamp with a printed shade to brighten up the space and possibly a photo frame on the other side :)

Here is another mirror I am considering. Any thoughts? I like that it brings together the wood and gold ideas. It is much larger than the wood one I already have. 54 x 33 instead of 18 x 28.

After talking with the HVAC guru (my dad) I am going to try centering the dresser on the wall, even though it will cover a HVAC supply vent. I think having this whole set up centered and a much taller mirror will make this part of the room look like more of a real space instead of a smooched after thought. And, with the dresser moved over there will be no conflict with a mirror covering the light switch.

Any thoughts on this mirror?

If you sit in the chair, is the lightbulb glaring? If so, change the shade. A linen drum shade will add a more modern feel. Don't move the light switch, just keep your mirror or framed art to the right side of the dresser. Pull forward any objects sitting on the left side of your dresser top, a nice patterned bowl for example, or a bright laquered box. 3 or 5 items on the tabletop, odd numbers anyway.

The dresser must be wider and taller than the mirror to create balance between the two.

I like the mirror placed off center. You could hang some small prints behind the lamp centered on the wall space left by placing the mirror off-center.

I agree a wider mirror might be better... as to art, do you have 'enough' in your room already? or just want to check your hat, etc. before you walk out?

I reread the postings and I had posted pretty much the same suggestion earlier. At least I'm consistent!!

Mirror size and HVAC rules have flown out the window! We had the winning bid on this mirror at an auction and we love it. I need to take it to a framer to put a better hanging device on the back. It weighs an absolute ton. It is a very old wood and gesso piece. It might be too big, and our dresser might be stopping some heat flow, but such is life.

[Note in the pic, with my partner's face so unskillfully cropped out, the white part at the top of the mirror is not a huge dent but just a draped towel so it doesn't mark the wall.]

When we get it hung, I will start investigating better shapes, sizes, and colors of lamp shades. Any suggestions would be helpful.
