Interior designing with a blank canvas: Hallway

Well we have just moved in to a new home and decided to leave all (yes everything) our furniture behind. We now find ourselves in a bit of a pickle with regards to where to begin furnishing all the rooms. We are have no experience in interior designing. Our previous home was always an interim abode until we found a nice family home.

I will be troubling you all room by room for advice and discussion and my wife and two boys (10 and 12) are really excited about the opportunity of working with a totally blank canvas.

What we like: Modern but not too 'way out', minimal, Arabic (Moroccan, Turkish), neutral with accents, practical, low maintenance.
What we don't like: Fuss, too glam

We are regularly have friends and family around so need to be able to accommodate.
So starting with the hallway we decided that we want to have a mirror and console table. We saw and loved the mirror in the photos and decided to use it as a starting point.

What kind of console would go best? Black, White, Dark Wood, Light Wood? We want to be able to put a pair of small Ottomans underneath as we have a no shoes policy past the hallway and the Ottomans will be useful to remove and put on shoes.

The hallway can probably accommodate a table up to 140cm wide and 35-40cm deep. The mirror width is about 85cm.

The hallway is currently lit using spotlights and is very bright, we would like to use a lamp(s) on the table for some better lighting.

I am sure some of you will have some great ideas and pointers as we go from room to room. I will try and keep you all updated with before and after pictures.

Lounge and Family room next!

Over to you all.
