Consider moving the sofa so it is directly across from the window. Angle the new chair to the left of the FP. Set the TV (on a swivel base) on a credenza left of the window and the desk to the right where it is now. Float the two smaller chairs and smallest table facing the FP but as close to the sofa as possible, so there is room to navigate between them and the desk. They can face straight on to save space. Use the larger box table on the right of the sofa to be shared with the leather chair. Try the ottoman under the window and get a round glass and wood coffee table to break up the blocky-ness of the spce..

Why can't you put the tv behind where the sofa is now (on a stand or on the wall), move the sofa where the chairs are and get rid of the red chair...

A simple hole in drywall to run cords to baseboards is ok or a wire pipe in corner of both walls would do it. As for other components place a wall mount floating shelf under tv?

You may want to match it to the desk since they'll flank the window. Or you could find something second hand and paint both pieces to match.

Margo, I havent seen any pictures where the wall units extend past the fireplace. This picture is very helpful! Thank you. I'd think I'd need to go just to mantle height due my ceiling sloping up to 2 stories, is that correct? Do you think this is something we could do ourselves with ready made cabinets?

The TV will provide a huge counter balance and every seat in the room can see it. Art above the FP mantel and over the desk, plus darker closable window treatments will carry the right side. If you had a glare proof TV that could go opposite the window you could flank the FP with the matched chairs, float the sofa in front of the window with the desk pushed behind it like a sofa table and the leather chair left of the TV. Get out the furniture sliders and play with it until the right combo falls in place!

I think River mistook the art over the FP for the TV which is in the cabinet on the right. Shush, children!

ok, i moved things around. Husband didnt mind since the Lions were painful to watch. I'll try to take a picture tomorrow, but here is a rough sketch of it.....I was thinking to move the desk to the other side of the window and put the TV on it until I find something better? I'd then move the old ice box to the desk location. The desk is really heavy and hard to move (even with sliders), so I dont want to move it if its a bad idea. Thanks.

I think this is working well and it really won't feel "left-heavy' once the right side is complete. Art and drapes will make a big difference. You'll need a piece over the sofa and one above the desk. If your husband uses the desk regularly, I'm not sure you should put the TV on it. If you want a credenza that looks similar to the desk, here's one. I'm not crazy about the "plants," as they read as visual clutter to me. You don't need them a s fillers because there is plenty going on. Noting the dining area, for future projects you should consider a rug that is 4' wider and longer than the table top so the chairs don't fall off of it when in use. Think about a new chandelier there. You need one that case light upward on the ceiling rather than down on the table and diners. Down lights at the table tend to be harsh and cast unflattering shadows on people's faces. A beautiful chandelier that could be doubled by the mirror over the FP would be wonderful. And I'd turn that mirror vertically. You have the space to do so and that will make it "fit" within the footprint of the firebox and surround for better visual balance. The wall space you have can handle it.

The way the original room was positioned was calming, balanced and peaceful. What happened? Go with your gut, you know what you like!

Here's another thought for you if you hate the new arrangement. Glare on the TV may be an issue for you, but blackout drapes can take care of that. Ideally, the lounger style chair probably needs to be opposite the TV but I think this is the best way to get all three chairs in. The window may be too centered on this plan too.

I really appreciate the help and ideas. Husband does not use the desk, it just a place to collect his clutter, If I could rid of the desk, we'd have a much happier marriage lol. Another reason we like the sofa on the left wall is for the nice view we have out that big window. Not sure about this last idea, with only a Tv on that wall...it goes up to 2 stories, so seems like it'd look lost. I really like the idea of putting the mirror veritcal over the fireplace.
Alternatively, do you think the mirror would look okay if moved to over the sofa, and then some art over the fireplace? Just trying to fill up that big sofa wall space and I'm not fond of and would be incapable of doing a gallery of pictures.
That is a pretty crezenda, thank you. Honestly, I'm trying to trust your vision, but especially that corner up by the fireplace looks so crowded with everything moved to the left side. I think I need to temporarily hang up some mock curtain panels to help me visualize.....

bevelat: thank you for kind comments. I'm very happy with the current room arrangement, except for what to do with the TV. I really hate how it looks angled back there in the corner, so all of this is to see if there is a more pleasing arrangement.

Your original placements make sense. Make the TV stand minimal, hang something vertical over the fireplace, and look for a much larger piece over the sofa. Think tapestry if the vent is problematic. When the wall pieces are enlarged, they will have the focus, and not the TV. Happy Houzzing.

I think you may see that corner differently if you remove the tall plant, but I understand your concern. You just have to play with the furnishings until you start feeling like it is falling in place. Perhaps removing the desk from the equation would be a good thing. Try it under the TV if you can get some help to do the heavy lifting.

studio, would you kindly describe or show me a pic of what you mean by a minimal Tv stand? Should it be wider than the TV, and would white or cherry look best? thanks.

My first post has an example in situ, but here are some others:

Try the corner wall mount along with a corner piece made from old shutters. You can make the corner shutter shelf from the ground or from the top of the fridge box and high enough for several inches of it to be hidden by the mounted tv. The shudders can be used to hide your wires and depending on the shudder width, you can make a shelf and possibly hold your cable box or nic nacs.

Just in case my description wasn't too clear here's a photo. Some older stripped cypress shutters would like nice with your decor. And again make them as tall or as short as you want or need them. Good luck!

I have to try your last arrangement idea. We're not warming up to the first one. My daughter is pushing to put the Tv on that solid wall also. If I do that, what do you suggest to put above it, as that wall is a big expanse of nothing...

Bevelat, I'm looking if they have swivel stands I could put on a crezenda. I'm leery of putting it onto the wall, since TV styles change so much. We previously had a huge antique white oak stained Tv armoire thing for the older style Tv's, i think we paid 6000K for it and now can't give it away. Come to think of it, I have the bottom part downstairs, maybe I could paint it white and bring it up again for this TV. Although, I can really picture a sleek, more modern style crezenda. Is it okay to mix traditional and modern styles in the same room?

That arrangement may work even better without the desk behind the sofa, since you said you could eliminate it. You could pull the sofa back further and then the two matching chairs can flank the FP. The lounger and table can angle toward the FP in front of the window. I'm not a fan of decorating any higher than where you live (the lower 8-10' of a space.) Bring the focus down to eye level with great decorating and the huge wall won't catch so much attention. Photo the lower part of that TV armoire and let's see. How are the measurements? You want it to be about 25% wider than the TV. You can use painter's tape to map the base and TV off on the wall before lugging it upstairs.

If you couldn't have the tv on the wall where the sofa is because of glare, a mirror just might reflect enough light over to still cause a glare issue with the tv. Experiment with this before hanging the mirror or just find another spot for it and hang artwork.

Here is a pic of a chest we have in the basement. This used to be part of a TV armoire. The top section was discarded, but we saved the base as it's solid oak. The top is unfinished. What if I painted it either white or the wall color and got new hardware and maybe removed the bottom molding and put new feet on it. Do you think it could be given a new life as a crezenda?

I think you've got a winner there! Update it with the feet and hardware, maybe painting it the same as the FP surround and trim. Or you could distress it a bit with some of the wall color and a darker base to work with your other tables. You might even add some trim to the drawers - easy to pick up at the big box hardware stores.

Visit a tv appliance store and buy a proper stand. The clerk can advise you on proper size . I like the sleek smoked black glass ones which look trim and modern and disappear in the room.

To be honest, as far as I'm concerned, a television belongs on the wall. Preferably over the mantel. I would also consider using cord concealer to maintain a clean look. I've included pictures of my living room as a example.

Have the tv wired through the wall if you decide to hang it ..concealer is for under your eyes

TV stands are just that, stands to hold the TV up. Usually, they are pretty styleless, and most always they are just large enough for the set. For visually balanced, decorative TV placement, a credenza, or your base from the former large center, will work best.

I appreciate everyones input, its been very helpful. I'm going to try the tv on the wall across the window again. I forgot our new windows have a UV coating and husband thinks there should be less glare. I feel most comfortable with a more traditional furniture type arrangement for the TV. I'm going to work on using our cabinet base for the TV, thinking of trying AS chalk paint in either a white or maybe a brownish taupey grey, and look into adding moldings to the drawers to make it look more interesting with a glaze. If it works, I might do the desk too....Definitely will hang the mirror vertical over the fireplace. We're having the room painted after Christmas, so the mirror will be down anyway (it weighs 150 lbs!!) and will rearrange the furniture then too. Thank you all again. Now I need figure what lamps will look good..ackk, another journey :)

No wait! I'm still working on this room....I still need help. The room is ~ 18ft, 8in X 15f 5 in.

the wall across from the window is ~ 14 ft. and then it angles in, the angled portion is ~ 5 ft.4 in. I currently have sofa across from the windows, 2 chairs in front of windows, recliner next to sofa at fireplace end. I just finished re-finishing the cabinet for the TV which I'm thinking of putting where the ice chest is now. the cabinet will almost fill that wall entirely. the desk can stay or go. I like the desk idea, just not this cluttered one. The pics above with the 2 chairs at the open end of the room did not work. It looked good on paper, but the chairs are too big in person and visually cut off the room, we prefer a more open space. Still struggling with putting the on the sofa wall, sofa on the window wall, but do love sitting on the sofa looking out the window.

mass, perhaps you could repost, so we don't have to read through miles of no longer relevant material. Also updated pics would be nice. then you can just post the updated link on this site in case someone comes in. We will be happy to help, just a little much to see what is going on. ok?
