Wainscoting AND vertical wood paneling?

I have 1970's style (real) wood paneling everywhere in a house we are close to moving into. Way too much orange for me! A lot of ideas are flowing for paint, sheetrock, or staining... Most of which will take some serious convincing for my husband.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE tall wainscoting, and I'm wondering -- would it be the craziest idea to have tall wainscoting OVER the lower portion of painted (or dark stained) vertical wood paneling (so that the wood paneling still shows on the upper few feet of the walls)? I can't readily find any google images, so I'm guessing that it is a crazy idea. :)

PS. Sorry for the dark picture -- the house didn't have any electricity on when I came to take pics. On that note -- it has a ton of windows and is well lit considering the age of the home

Crazy idea. Don't do it. It looks like you've got knotty pine paneling. Look for ideas that use those kind of walls before you do something drastic.

HI -- I would just get rid of the old paneling --- it's done it's time and it should go . Then do your high wainscoting on new walls . Much nicer look . What your suggesting would be too busy . Check and up grade the electrical once the old paneling is off .

A more rustic version of wainscoting could possibly work with the paneling maybe like the plate rail style in Craftsman houses. Paint the paneling and do the plate rail panels in a darker color. A formal detail like that classic wainscot might look out of place if your house is really seventies casual. Google that craftsman style.

Thanks for the input, all! Lefty, I agree, but doubt I'll be able to get my husband on board for tearing off "good wood." :) Craig, I LOVE craftsman paneling as well -- really all things crafstman. The paneling is really only in the living room and entry, I'll see what I can work with for the rest of the house and just stick with painting the paneling there (or googling your helpful suggestion). We are planning a big flip, over time.. I'll be sure to post pictures as we go along. Thanks again.
