You should get the rug first and than add pillows . There are lots of options to go with gray sofa.

Pillows are beautiful. I would lower painting, which goes perfectly with everything. Id go for a glass top and medium wood framed coffee table, or metal. Carpet could be in brown, russet, blue colors, whichever color you would like to use...with couch being monochromatic, you could have a patterned carpet. I would look for contemporary design in keeping with your things.

love the colors I would pull from your pillows a vibrant color, the turquoise, navy and green, putting a frame around the painting would help the scale. Coffee table should fit the negative space in the sofa area, it could be glass, marble wood or combination. Have you thought of painting the walls a soft turquoise it would be lovely with colored pillows and the grey sofa. This is a room I did for my sister that shows the color. good luck.

Thank you all for the suggestions. Makes me feel so much better knowing I'm on the right path. I did want to get the rug first but I found these cushions on clearance and didn't want to lose them :P Plus it has all the colors I usually like. Coffee table I was looking for wood as I have a 2.5yr old and glass is not the best option with him. I found a table that I like but I feel I need something bigger. This is an old rug I'm just using at the moment. I have this chair that I want to get upholstered, I'm thinking a teal or darker blue for the base cushion. Attaching a picture of the fireplace right next to the sectional. We just bought the house so we are on a budget. I'm trying to use my old furniture and art and just move things around a bit. At the moment I've just hung things where nails already existed. My husband isn't a fan of drilling nails unless I'm sure of where I want the things to go!! Once I have my rug and coffee table I can focus on the art. I want to do some posters and picture frames.

I think either choice would be great for the chair cushion. I'm wondering what you're leaning towards on rugs... solid or patterned? I do feel the new rug should be bigger. (I understand you're just using this for now :) I do agree the coffee table should be bigger. Maybe just use that as a side table since you like it. I would pick a rug before deciding on the cushion color. :)

I would consider a simpler pattern with the pillows a ribbed carpet would be nice and definitely larger, have it sit outside the edge of the sofa arm and to the end of the fireplace including your chair. What about the hemp rug you show above in turquoise in 8 x 10 if that works?

Why don't you try the look without the plain turquoise pillows on the sofa and if you have a throw/cover to lay at the end of sectional(maybe a plain color from pattern pillow) that will add something extra to that end of the sofa. Your print is fine but is competing with your pattern pillows. A gallery wall of black and white photos may work. The coffee table is a little to high and small for the area. I do like the idea of an ottoman or maybe a retro/old wood coffee table. You may want to consider a ottoman or table with storage for your son's extra toys. I will have to look through some pics to send over for possible rugs. You may want to consider your print that is above your sofa, and place it above your mantle(if it fits). Take it off the wall and just sit it on top of the mantel to see if you like it there. Maybe take some pics for us to see.

here are a few rugs, and arm chair that resembles yours to show you possible color, but you may want to keep that a neutral color or you may want to keep your rug a neutral color.

btw-did you ever consider putting the Television above the fireplace? It maybe a little too high. you could then turn your section to face the fireplace and make it a more intimate sitting area. sorry for all the suggestions...i just love helping out.

Or put the TV on the wall where the couch is and then float the couch facing it? The TV looks a little lonely. Your colors are fab!

@renee...that is also a great option to consider. i agree that the tv looks lost and there is too much space in between. she could than do that back wall with shelving or wall of bookcases to include baskets or pretty containers for extra storage..with kids you need plenty of hiding places for toys..;-)

Consider an overdyed patchwork or oriental rug.

The TV needs to be there as the cable wiring is there. At the moment we just put the Tv there eventually we want to mount it. I really like the idea of an ottoman and also looking at coffee tables with storage. I found this at a consignment store and really like it.

If TV location hamstrings your room's arrangement it is worth the $$$ to have it moved.

if you don't mind me asking. How much is the chest from the consignment shop? The reason I ask, I'm thinking that one maybe a little to early american...which i'm not even sure that term still exist(that was a term when i was growing up;-) I see more of a modern or retro or transitional coffee table/ottoman. This is only my opinion...if it is something you really like, you are the one that has the final say.. i don't know if you have the same problem as I do, but if I ask for my husbands opinion...i usually go with the opposite of what he like..;-)

Not a bad price, and it does look older and sturdy. Would be a warm piece in front of the blue. I was thinking ikea round white tables, for safety of your son, but this chest wins out for me. Very nice and a place to put toys or blankets, games, etc.

If you are going to change art over couch, go bigger, longer to cover most of sofa.

you may want to consider one of the following ottomans...it as storage, more sitting and flips over as trays for serving on...look on Wayfair.com the below are around $150.00 some styles come in various colors..

@groveraxle how did you do that?? I really like the rug and the ottoman. I was unpacking and totally forgot about my pouf I had got from India. I was wondering if I should incorporate these colors into the family room and use the pouf here as well :)

Also this is the family room so it gets used the most, I'm a little concerned about a lighter colored rug getting dirty with my 2.5yr old

Thought: i wouldnt do an ottoman or coffee table at all. Do end tables. But if you neeeed one, do the beautiful black leather bench that acts as a storage too.

I opened 2 windows so I could see Capel rug in muted jade with your couch and pillows. Nice that the rug is muted shade in the pillows, and a subdued look....
Vintage Bastille rug has middle shape like pillow does, but then I think the patterned art might be much.....

Thoughts on dommatt's rug and chair.
Patterned rug: for me, I'd re-use or donate your outer/more green pillows [rug is enough].
If a bright solid aqua rug- not too bright, maybe you'd like to keep those outer greens and add the modern chair posted....

I went back to another of dommatt's posts- with diamond shag rug .... that looks the most neutral and maybe art and pillows would be good then. Seems other rugs have too much going on If you want to keep everything as pictured... sorry if I've missed posts.

I totally agree with Renee. you really should move the tv.

Yikes I just looked up price on the Capel rugs and the first rug price starts around $2500 to $6000. I'm not sure if you had mentioned your budget. I'm sure Capel rugs are very nice and worth the money because I have purchase an oriental rug in the pass and it was pretty pricey, but well worth the money. Resale was great also.

I don't want to get stuck with the cushion colors those are just 3 cushions. So if I need to change things around I'm totally open to it. I like pop of colors blue, yellow, pinks, orange. The couch is the only fixed thing rest everything can change as we have a living room that needs to be furnished as well :) This is the family room where we will spend most of our time. Rug, coffee table and counter stools is what I have in mind to start setting up this room. I definitely cannot afford to spend $2500 or even $1000 on a rug at the moment :(

Don't feel bad... and you don't have to spend 2500.00 or 1000.00 to have a rug that looks nice. :)

Want to mention that as you are looking at the patterns you have in this family room, remember to factor in your side chair, if you plan on leaving it in this room. That is loaded with pattern. Think - - artwork + patterned pillows with a solid rug, or artwork + patterned rug and simple pillows.

I know you are in the process now, so you need to work out some things before working on the pillows. Settle your art piece[s] and rug first. They are bigger investments and in the scheme of things, they are in the category of "building blocks".
