I agree with the Flair lightings. A horizontal fixture is perfect for your table and contemporary style. A change in art however would be Several black and white photos, framed with white mats and black frames. You could hang them horizontally along the same line if they were the same size prints or with different size frames make groupings. You can also add wall sconces on the far wall with a buffet. Black and white will be a very dramatic feel to your dinning room.

Hi amg. If you have a limited original art budget I suggest focusing your art search to emerging artists. Look around at local art shows, MFA exhibitions, etc for something you love and buy it quickly. Good stuff always disappears!
If you want to make online with your limited budget buy an oversized poster from a a good museum - like a Jackson Pollack from the Albright Knox Museum or MOMA in NYC. (Don't order it framed from a museum. Have a local framer do your job.) You can't go wrong with a poster of a good work of art, especially when you are a limited budget. Check out Jackson Pollack, Clyfford Still and/or Basquiat. Keep it fun, energetic and contemporary.

I would add character to the room with wood moldings; Crown and wainscoting. The light fixture is the jewelry of the room that reflects your personality. A floating wood floor in a rich hue will add lux and warmth. Large art or a grouping of pictures will give the wall a focus and interest.

Here is another interesting question. That large wall is 11ft. What is the max size canvas I should be looking at for that wall? I've come across a few I like, and I want to get opinions. The first ones, I find myself oddly drawn to the artist. I actually have an idea for a painting I want him to do for my living room in this same style. BUT, is there not enough color? I like the fruit for the kitchen. They are 3 canvas, 20x20 each. The next is 72" x 36", one single canvas. The last, seems like it might be a little too much color, and is 24"x48".

Also posting ideas for rectangle chandeliers. Since your space is modern, you should either stick with something bold, like black iron to maintain that edgy look or you might consider a bit of glam and sparkle. I think the 1920's Odeon Smoke Glass chandelier (top left photo) would bring the dark gray walls and the warm flooring together.

Love the bling the top chandeliers would bring to your dinning room. My choice is the bottom left of the grouping of four. The shade with the black strips would look great with your walls and black in the kitchen.

No, that works well as does Thos. Baker's gray and tan abstract hanging light. I'm in the no-bling camp.

Because the room is dark and you have three dark colors--gray walls, tan floor, black chairs--the paintings that work best, have some of those colors. Again, Thos. Baker nails it.

I think the long white hanging light fixture would be just right in your lovely dining room.

We love the dining area and the grey paint color! I think what we can all agree on is some color, or something in the room to give it that "wow" factor. Certainly thinking an elongated (oval or rectangular) chandelier/pendant for over the table if you wanted to steer clear of a monochromatic colorful glass chandelier.

So much advice, it's overwhelming. I never expected to have over over 60 posts, from amazing people contributing great ideas. I'm torn between making the leap to a more "blingy" chandelier, or staying with the more docile, linear shade chandelier.

Docile... can be a pleasant player in a decorated room, allowing other players to shine... let me ask if your chairs are plastic nice but plastic?
then I'd think twice about chandeliers of all bling. Some have a shade with several dangling crystals? has that been posted yet?

Think "tailored" not docile. Focus on an amazing piece of art that ties together your tan floor and dark gray walls, with a light background. Also if you're going to add a rug at some point that's another element. Bling might be a little too much. Hopeful Thos. Baker will weigh in again, but IMO, his choices in various posts will give you a sophisticated, tailored look that won't be docile at all.

If you decide on an informal bouquet of red flowers then as others have said you probably don't want to buy a bling-er. As you debate, think if there's a cool way, cheaper way to bring bling on the table/ dishes/ you use rings? .... I would suggest you put white-painted china cabinets with glass fronts all along the solid wall of the dining room. Or, you may prefer white-painted corner cabinets with glass-front doors and a large, framed mirror centered between them. Personally, I like the chandelier, and I hope you will find someone who likes and wants it. I disagree with sandradclark's idea of having the lights face downward because downward-facing lights can cause a glare and make people very uncomfortable. Up-shining lights with globes can cast a gentle glow that is easier on the eye and bright enough for the people seated at the table.
