What would you do with two fireplaces?

We never plan to use the fireplaces because of children's asthma. One is in the back of the house painted white and the other is left in brick. Suggestions?

THank you for the gas insert idea.

How would you convert a fireplace into a built in bookcase? I am not sure we really need two fireplace and was told one fireplace was in bad shape. May not be in use.

I like both the gas insert and the bookshelf idea. I don't know what it entails to close up a fireplace, but if you look around here and online you can see some cute ideas. I like #14 on here http://www.brit.co/fireplace-decor/

Have question about the gas insert? There are certain days we cannot have a fire. Would this be in effect with a gas insert? Would we have to have a gas line?

Sheri: love the link. I am thinking of turning it into a dog house now. A place for the dog to sleep but husband wants to put a big ikea bookshelf in front of it.

    Hi happycl8

"No burn" days do not apply to gas fireplaces.

Yes, you would have to have the fireplace piped for gas, and you would have to have either natural gas or propane service.

Even fireplaces that are in "bad shape" can usually be converted using a gas insert, if that is a practical way for you to go.

When you get a chance to post photos, it will be easier for us to make specific suggestions.

@Sheri - Those are some cute and practical ideas for converting an existing fireplace into something more decorative and useful.

Actually techinicallly three fire place with this house. One outside, two inside. Huh?

Could you brick in the brick one & the put a book shelf over the outside? I love the white one... Plus if you ever want to resale having a fireplace will be nice.

I am not sure what you mean brick in the brick one. Can you explain that further? I am not sure I would want a bookshelf in front of the firepit which is outside. I believe the red brick one on inside is the one with the mess up flue. I too also like the white one but it is really off centered.

Lots of people don't use their fireplaces. They are still pretty and mantels are great to decorate.

For this fireplace photo attached ... I think it was posted as yours right?

What if you filled it in with brick? Like the 2nd attached photo? I've seen people put candles in them but with asthma probably not a great idea...

Thanks for posting the photos, @happycl8.

Hmmm. . . all three of the fireplaces are sitting in odd asymmetrical positions relative to the spaces they occupy. A bit awkward.

I'd be tempted to do something more modern in the living room, like this Mendota Fullview insert:

In the family room off of the kitchen, I think something a little more rustic might be cool, like this Horizon insert by Valor:

I think I'd leave the outdoor one like it is, for Fall wienie roasts, which is what it looks like it was designed for, sitting that high off the floor.

Are the inserts the fire part? I am still really confused by these inserts cause they both look the same.

The insert is a new firebox, face and surround, which in both these cases includes a multifunction remote control and flue liner to exhaust up the chimney. There are a lot of subtle differences that make them different, including the look of the fire itself, the BTU (heat) output of each and the physical size. I'd need to know the exact dimensions for those fireplace to know what would fit, but these two looked like they would visually fit in those rooms.
