Fabric comes in all sorts of widths. You'll need to inquire further. Widths vary greatly depending on the type of fabric you're purchasing. When it says sold by the yard, either they're firm on only even yards, but more likely you can purchase 1 and 1/2, or 1 and 1/4 etc. Depending on the use of this fabric, you may need to allow for shrinkage and pre shrink the fabric prior to putting the fabric into your project.

Fabric comes in 44", 54" 56" 60 " wide and other sizes. So by the yard means 36 inches by what ever width the description states.

So your questions to whomever you are purchasing fabric from are, (a) what is the width of the goods, and -if it's a patterned fabric, (b) what the repeat is, and if it's a directional pattern if it's railroaded. Also, if it's an upholstery fabric, washing it may damage it - because of sizing/backing. Check the cleaning code.

Most of what I've seen lately is sold in 45" or 60" widths. Typically I buy a bit more than I think I'll need (just in case) and donate any leftover to a local quilting/sewing group.

A yard equals 36" long (or 3 feet long) x whatever width of the fabric is. Since your fabric is 54" wide x 36" long (or 3 feet long) = equals one yard.
