Need ideas for kitchen countertops

I'm getting new upper cabinets that go to the ceiling and redoing one wall of the kitchen to remove a desk area and replace it with floor to ceiling cabinets as well. The cabinets will be white--shaker style with bead board centers (not much different from what I already have). I'm also getting new countertops to replace the white laminate I have. I can pretty much do anything, but I want to keep the white kitchen and can't seem to find something that maintains a cottage style and leans toward white without being...all white, which I already have. Would love some suggestions.

I'll check them out. Thanks. But anything marble-like seems, well, not cottage-y. Am I wrong?

We are currently in the process of doing a white kitchen. We decided to do all the uppers with glass doors which really reduces the "white-ness" of an all white kitchen. We are also doing butcher block counters which (if you are willing to wipe them with oil every 3 months or so) look great and are one of the least expensive options for counters.

Thanks, Kate. I like the look of butcher block, but not the upkeep. I also worry about food bacteria lingering in the surface. How will you keep them clean?

thanks for the picture, Margo. You're right, the kicthen IS gorgeous! Can't put my finger on it, though, but it seems...something that I'm not looking for. More formal? I don't know. It seems kind of too elegant for a cottage. See, this is why I haven't found anything that's....right.

I think something like this would look good, still cottage feeling. It doesn't say what kind it is though. I think some glass doors on sons of the uppers would be lovely too.

I would go with an unpolished gray concrete to give it a warm, earthy cottage feel...

More ideas, I have a wood butchers block, it's great, though I normally cut up on a board, easy to keep clean, I just spray with vinegar and wipe down, once a month I oil the top just with some olive oil, had it about 15 years and still looks brand new, last pic is my butchers block, don't look at blue countertop that's changing soon too lol

I would use black accents to maintain your cottage style. Black and white backsplash and black cabinet hardware might be a good idea.

Here's a link to my eBook called 30 Interior Design Tips for Luxury Homes that might help you! We offer several different books as well on our site. They are FREE for the asking.

Thank you all so much. I wanted to respond to each of you individually but couldn't figure out how. Pics are great. Not comfortable with black because the kitchen opens into the den and there's no black there. I like the whitish/brown top in blenheimnewzealnd. Wonder what it is. I've looked at concrete. I really like it, but wonder if it's too rugged for my look. Tallenko, I'll check out your books. Thanks again.

Tell me what you like/don't like about soapstone. I think it may be too dark, but would like to hear why you'd choose it.
I have soapstone (unwaxed) at my beach house...it's getting a rustic patina over time. Waxed may be too dark for your liking. Make sure you request mined in America...character / color of Chinese can be greenish. Luckily, there's a quarry in Virginia near Charlottesville.

Consider slate or Silestone "Cygnus" in the suede finish. It looks like a slate. Soap stone and slate are classic Country kitchen hard surfaces. Wood would also be a nice choice. Visit these websites for further information...be sure to look at maintenance and warranty info, too.

No direct rule on what to do, you live there and it should fit your taste and lifestyle. Here is a kitchen we did for a young family and they mixed materials. the island is Carrara Marble the main counter is a honed black granite which took on a slate look. If you like contrast then you can go dark and if you want to keep the same then just go light.
