I think campaign chests would be perfect. In fact, I have a pair that are just right. I buy them whenever I find them and have iron stands made to sit them on to make them higher. (Not everyone embraces 21" high nightstands) I've used a pair of them on iron legs for a sofa table and it was fabulous. Because they are deep, you have so much more flat surface to accessorize with.

Why is everything so square? Any rounded corners out there?

Would love to know where you got the bench at the foot of the bed!

Your bench, bed and bedding looks pretty. Everything looks great. I would try adding a basket for storage.

Yohalley, round is not very practical for beds and dressers! Although a suppose a round bed would be very vintage 70s!

Stryker, The 2nd photo you put up is almost EXACTLY what I have been searching for. Where does it come from? I actually do want legs and 3 drawers. I was hoping to find something similar with the top drawer being open so I could put my books there. And I want real furniture, not Ikea.

Perhaps Beloved (damn! I may have to start calling MY husband that) would like something like this..West Elm's Patchwork Nightstand. We have them in our master bedroom, and they are really quite functional. I especially like the pull out "ledge", and the two drawers plus cabinet are sufficient storage for just about anything. Fingers crossed I can upload this photo from the iPad.

If you're sticking with the gray's, I would look for a black or stainless tool chest! Great drawers to hide/store various items. Look for the ones that go on top of the big chests. Should be the right size.

Not arguing, but what qualifies as vintage? What are the criteria?

The darling children refer to 70s finds as vintage! But I think I was using the word as one would in regarding wine...vintage 2010 would not imply old, just a certain style, climate, etc for that year.
And trust me, this place was vintage 1977! Very much of the era.

I would move the bed to the left where there's more wall space so that you can get
matching nightstands for both sides (perhaps this is your plan?). With the modern style this room has I think a floating nightstand is the best. I tried to copy some examples with no success. On houzz, search floating furniture and you will see some great examples. It can be installed at the perfect height.

Maybe a fabulous, chunky antique chest in walnut... The search alone could be fascinating!

No room to move bed over, end of bed would interfere with chair at other end of room. Floating nightstands would not have the storage required for Beloved's socks...

Stick with something in a vintage white, grey, charcoal or black. Don't let it be higher than your headboard. Think outside of the box; Improvise or Modify. Maybe add that splash of a favorite color! Some ideas to consider...

The trouble is with your headboard... Were it not for its "wings" over-extending the bed, you could build - or have built - a simple matching drawer set which would mount on the wall (at the perfect height) adjacent to the bed. But your headboard's design puts any such mounted nightstand out of arm's reach while still IN bed. A custom drawer set could be built "notched" to integrate with the winged headboard. That's the solution I'd pursue. Meanwhile, sized so as to fit under his current night table - buy "Beloved" a square storage basket into which he can put his socks...

Have you thought about working with a custom designer? A small piece like this would not take long to design and construct and you would get exactly what you want. I don't know about CO but I'm sure there are craft furniture makers in the area.

My custom furniture designer is usually my Beloved!
The wings don't interfere with reaching the existing nightstand, so that's not an issue. Mounting something to the wall would probably interfere with the electrical outlets, which were carefully placed so as not to be hidden by extra wide headboard.

Then mount something to the wall and move the boxes so as not to interfere with the nightstands! That's not a very big job at all - not even a messy one! ;- )

Yeah, no, we're done....we went down to the studs and put it all back again! The drywall will not be violated! It's been a two year process.

You don't find that 19" is a bit low for a dresser?

He does have a dresser in our small built in closet, he just needs another drawer or two...he is skiing everyday, he can bend! And he does not want it taller, as the primary function is as a nightstand.

Have you looked at Room & Board's offerings? They have several different styles that might work, since most are available in several finishes and sizes, and you can customize some down to the inch. The height seems to be the sticking point, but 22" H would be okay, wouldn't it?

Thanks for posting, and the great ideas for side tables in the boudoir. I have a hubby who needs function as well, reading, writing, lap top. He likes things simple and within reach. We are mid-reno as well. We have a 'vintage 1974 ranch'. It's been interesting, good luck.

@Helen Hart - They sell lots of "over the bed" tables (highly upgraded from hospital style!) But a simple cabinet shelf insert works great too - especially for laptops.Most often seen inside an upper kitchen cabinet [white (usually) plasti-coated metal square grids] it divides a shelf's space to double its capacity...GREAT over the lap work surface.
