Stunning room. I would try placing the console table behind the sofa and let the beautiful art stand on its own. Maybe, you could lower it slightly on that wall. You really don't need a table beneath it. Worth a try. If that doesn't work, I don't think you need anything behind the sofa. It has beautiful, clean lines and doesn't need anything behind it. Love your modern decor! Also, the painting between the 2 windows needs to be lowered about 2 inches and your wall next to the tv needs something on it.

hi Karen, the console table is too high. the art between the windows will be lowered already. actually we are not.sure if this is the one staying there. the tv will be moved to the wall across from the sofa where you can see a lot of clutter :) thanks for the complements!

Isa, after looking carefully, I thought the console might be too high. I still think you don't need anything behind your sofa. Can't wait to see the changes you make. I think they will look great. Your room is gorgeous and love your choice of art. Please keep us posted.

I would reconsider the current arrangement. I think the space would feel more open if you put the sofa on the window wall "centered with the two windows". Then, you can float the chairs across from each other. The tv will be opposite the sofa but you can still angle the tv when you want to watch from the kitchen.

I agree with Darzy. Put the sofa against the wall and float the pair of chairs... this will enable you to see into the room and "invite" the spaces integrate.

First, I don't think the sofa needs anything behind it. I would leave it where it is for better TV viewing.

Second, both of the art pieces are too big for the walls they're on. Can't see the wall where the Bertoia chairs are, but perhaps they could both go there. I would not put anything on the wall where the poster is, and I would put smaller art over the console where the enormous picture is now.

Because you seem to have a contemporary aesthetic, I assume the proposed fireplace will be long and low and sleek.

Why won't a sofa table work. Seems like you are limiting your options. I think a sofa table is the solution.

For years I had a sofa backed to a dinette table and finally moved it and wondered why I didn't open the space before! If you like the "blocked" space feel, keep it as it is. But, if you want the spaces to feel open and "welcoming" and "invite" the two spaces together, I'd move the sofa. BTW... I love your furniture and the modern design. IMHO your style lends to a more open and less cluttered feel.

I will take a picture of the wall with the bertoias. the tv will.br moved to.the larger wall. below it will be a 44' stainless steel fireplace with floating cabinets on each side. I want to be able to vary the furniture. the sofa can be where it is now or be moved to the wall with the windows. the other wall is to small for it.

It looks nice, but how is it working for you entering the space. (With having to walked around the chairs to the left?) Where do you sit mostly for TV viewing? When the TV is moved, will viewing be optimal from the sofa? Or is this not a concern? :)

Turn the sofa to be on the large end wall with the two round tripod glass tables flanking it and your biggest art hanging 5" above it. Hang the art that is between the windows 5" above the sofa table. Place the Bertoia chairs with a small to medium tulip table at the windows as a game or chess table with the chairs facing each other over it. Add a long credenza in an accent color to the wall where the chairs are are now, and wall mount the TV above it. Take that accent color back to the windows and chair seats with floor to ceiling stationary panels and matching cushions. You might sprinkle it on the sofa with a couple of pillows. Bridge the space between the sofa and chair that are opposite it with your coffee table 18" from both the sofa and chairs. This may mean pulling the chairs onto the rug a bit more, or even turning the rug. What are the cushions on the floor under the sofa table? I though maybe a dog bed. If not, I'd replace them with a pair of hassocks for more color and extra seats when needed. If you don't want any colored furniture as suggested, consider painting the large end wall as an accent using a color from the smaller poster art.

hi zazfuzzroc, there is plenty of space to enter the area. we mostly watch tv in our bedroom, and having the sofa perpendicular to it wont be such an issue. as a matter of fact, where the tv is now is horrible for day viewing, a lot of glare from the windows, and the last thing I wont is to make the room dark to be able to watch tv... also having cabinets and a fireplace on the larger wall will bring an architectural accent to the room.

hi decoenthusiaste, thenks for your comments, but we have already decided to put a fireplace with tv and cabinets and a reclaimed wood panel on the large wall. the room is also not big enogh to create a secondary seating by the windows. below the console with the big art is indeed a dog bed ;), that is moved when we receive guests.

Well, you might want to repost your dilemma when you get your wall done, if you don't know what to do with the furniture then. Show us the results, at least.

what to put behind sofa?
I just received our new sofa, and decided the furniture placements. across from sofa will be the tv woth fireplace and floating cabinets and shelves. on the left, above the bertoia diamond chairs will be art.
what to put behind sofa? because of the console with big art, a sofa table won't work. so maybe a shelving unit like the kallax? what you guys have as ideas? accents will be still changed and poster will be lowered. thanks!

Interior Affairs gets these these types of questions from many of our clients each and every day as we visit people's homes for consultations almost daily.
I always try to answer questions like these as diplomatic as possible...however; sometimes I still end up stepping on toes. So excuse me, if I do infact step on your toes.
The first problem I see is not so much what should go behind the TV but it seems to me you have a lot going on in this room and it does not seem to have a good direction. By that, I mean, it seems confusing. Anyone walking into the room would need to make a couple of decisions right away...like which way do I enter the room? and Which place should I sit? Where is the conversational area going to be? or Are we going to be watching the TV?
Good design gives direction! When the room is spaced planned correctly, the visitors or family members do not have to give any thought as to where or what direction they need to take while entering the room. There are two ideas listed below:
If these were my pieces of furniture and this were my dilemma, I would do this!
1. Make a traffic flow area first! This means the sofa most likely will need to be moved in order to compensate the traffic flow. There are two good places for the sofa. One is in front of the windows and the other is to place it on the large blank wall. I personally like placing it on the large blank wall and think moving the television would be the best option. then taking the two chairs and placing them in front of the windows with a small table in between them. Now the room is opened and the whole room feels much bigger. This could only work if the Television can be moved to the center of the left wall...so that television viewing would work.
2. Another plan would be to move the sofa in front of the windows and move the two chairs where the sofa is currently. However; the chairs I believe may be too large for the room and will still not create a sure direction for visitors and family members. So, maybe, if budget allows replace the two chairs with a smaller sofa or one larger chair from the same collection your new sofa is from. This will create a lot of seating space, and comfort for everyone. Then the TV should be placed on the center of the large wall with accessories and decorative wall decor; art and a little greenery. You then could use a console table to anchor the TV on the same wall and use two ottomans or two bench seats on either side of the console table for extra seating. A small cocktail table and perhaps one lamp table could also make the room more complete.

Isa, I like the new arrangement. I totally missed the Wassily chairs in the original photo; they were overshadowed by the sofa. The new arrangement is much more open and shows off your fabulous furniture.

After you move the TV and install the fireplace and shelves, move the huge art to the wall behind the Bertoia chairs, and hang the poster 5" above the console. Then the room will be perfect!
