Hard to tell from the photo but it looks a lovely piece. If so, it would be a pity to paint it. Instead, I would either swap out the table or add lots of cream or light coloured items below and above so that there is some contrast between the brown of the wall and tables.

If you decide to paint, a cream color or gray-blue from your carpet would be nice. Add a lamp and pretty tray or basket.

Any chance the spindles above the table could be painted white to match the other trim?

I would get rid of the chocolate paint, and paint the Spindles for sure!
