I would say a minimum of 24-30 inches. It all depends on whether you want to add something to the sides, like sconces, which cast a better light than a fixture over the mirror. Instead of gluing a mirror to the wall, go out and buy one with a nice frame. Homegoods has some that are very reasonable, in all kinds of finishes. Just make sure you hang it properly.

36 inches should be sufficient.
