You might want to try bringing the blue from the room up to the mantle.

The hurricane and candle fade away. I wonder if a blue candle would alleviate that.

The art feels a little small, and the chairs seem to be vanishing into the fireplace. I guess I'd try larger art and no knick-knacks up there, and then maybe a patterned cushion on one or both chairs.

It's a tough room. It's small.
On the other side of the room, there's a baby grand piano, my husband's idea ;) and so I'm not sure where else to put the chairs?! We live in So Cal so we don't use the fireplace much. Also, the room is right next to the kitchen. Room is def to small for a piano but it's the only spot we had for it..

Actually, I really like them both. I think they could be a bit too small, though. The painting in the black frame works beautifully with the piano, the area rug, and the rich blues in your room. Perhaps another print to match the one you decide on? Could you hang a pair above the mantel? Or a larger print? Just a thought. Beautiful space.

I think I like the darker framed art.....it pops against the wall and the mantle more and ties in with the room.

Could the piano sit more in the corner of the fireplace, with the player still facing out in to the room? Then the two chairs and the table go across from it? I know you have to be careful with light and heat with pianos, but wanted to suggest this to maybe give the chairs more room and seem like they were there to sit and enjoy a drink with some music.

I prefer the original painting because it seems to have a bit of orange. Change the orientation if you can. Use larger darker stuff on the mantel. I love these candlesticks from Restoration Hardware; the teal pot echoes your lamp. The rust lumbar pillows pull the bright from the art.

If you go with a painting or a mirror make it larger. The width should be almost the size of the mantel. I think a painting that you absolutely love would be just the ticket. Then the little items are incidental to the entire look and you won't be bored.

I would so like to see a huge blue & white ginger jar up on that mantle. Along with some silver candlesticks for bling.

And some contrasting pillows. That kind of deep blue in the chairs works nicely with a burnt orange for example.

Grover, you are so right about "dinning". I had never in my life seen that word misspelled until I went on Houzz. And it pops up a lot, not just occasionally. Lately browsed Craig's list and saw it there also.
Btw Kathleen, a picture above a mantel should be no wider than the firebox, so don't get anything bigger. I like a black framed pic for this room.

Do you have silver or gold anywhere else in the room? That might help with the choice. I just really liked the dark wooden ones grover showed.

What painting are you putting over the mantel? I think you have should decide on the painting first...that is the hard part-the accessories are easy to find.

I loved them too but I had wood there before and got tired if them. I'm thinking gold? I think we are going hang the smaller print there. I'd love to do a pair of prints, but it's not in the budget now.

Greetings. I think it's pretty and simply. If anything to give a booster I would take away the picture bring in something more angler or drama in shape placed a touch higher. :)

Just saw a picture someone posted of her mantel....and she did a beautiful job decorating it with the use of an orchid. A white orchid could add height and color to your mantel. Just a thought. Here is a picture of what she did. And her mirror is about the same size as your paintings. Hope this helps!

As far as gold or silver candle sticks, depends upon a couple factors. Which one you prefer, and which one goes with your other decor.

Your wall has a warm look so I am thinking gold. There again, silver can go too if you have the right balance.

As far as the ones in your picture, they are more rustic so not so much gold. Just try out both with some other items you are using and see what you think.

I think you room is very elegant and glamorous. I would not do anything too rustic. I really liked the coloring and shine of the silver vase you had up on the mantel in your first picture. I also think glass or crystal would be pretty. If I have repeated myself, please ignore this comment. Your room is gorgeous-love everything about it.

What color metals do you already have in the room? It appears the small table to left of fireplace has a gold base. You can mix both silver and gold if spread around well. My mantel is similar with a black framed mirror that has a silvery gold border and I use dark candlesticks for contrast and black accents spread around the room.

abbeyjean, re: the spelling of mantEL. "The ELephant is on the mantEL." Get it? I hope it helps you to remember the shelf above the fireplace as opposed to the cloak. Lol.

Here's what I did over my mantle. I was sick of it being so boring too so I added some chair rail and cut it and measured it to make a 3'x5' rectangle. I then spray painted the wood white, I then chose an awesome blue by Valspar(picture does it no justice) and painted the whole inside to make it pop. I'm sure this taste isn't for everyone but I absolutely love it. We have an open concept house with the walls being all the same color so this helped break it up and make it a focal point. Sorry for the bad filter and it was Halloween at the time :/

I like blue and silver mix with white. A interesting vase. Candles mix with plants. Just on ends. You might try a taller picture there. Pier One has one with a peacock which would work in your room. Color can be bought in with art.

Colors are good on other pic. But too small. Everyone having sells now. Invest in a nice piece. No glass over it. Frameless even.

Do you have Z Galleries. Great place for art, furn and accessories. I live in their stores. I love so much. They have a pic of a black baby grand piano. With bold color lord in it too. Check it out. You can google Baby grand art to see, different art. Would be a fun piece, for your room. Step out of the box, do t be tied to a certain look. The most i testing rooms are the once that mix it up. Same with mantel.

kathleen, what you need is a statement mirror on the mantel and bigger chairs. take the plant off that corner it belongs in the kitchen, the chairs should also be pushed further out and tilted a little more torwards the fireplace, furniture should never give their backs to a fireplace because the idea is that you would be sitting by the fire place enjoying someone play the piano. stick to silver decorative peices on the mantel but find conversation sparkers, things that will catch the eye or this is a good place to display mementos, pieces that speak about the people who live here and what they've done in their lives so far. hope this helps!

oh! and the walls neeed art and the windows would benefit from roman shades.
