Plaster the brick fire surround and paint it in a neutral grey or concrete colour. Tile over the hearth with dark charcoal tiles.
I think the wall hung TV is too high to be comfortable to watch. Would you consider putting to one side of the fireplace? If the TV was shifted it leaves room to display items on the mantle which you couldn't do with the TV above.
You could have built ins either side of the fireplace with the TV on one side and shelves for books and other accessories on the other.

I'll think about the fix for the fireplace, but the tv was a huge job, wires run behind drywall with outlets placed behind tv.......It is pretty comfortable to watch, will be trying to decide on new furniture also once the wall units become a part of the plan. Thanks.

HI -- Yes , get builtins on each side and a thick chunky mantel and then paint the whole wall , builtins, brick , mantel , wall - all one color. Benjamin Moore paints " Cloud white CC-40 " Then find a nice modern firescreen . Also fatten up all the baseboards and paint the same color in the house.

Lots of choices- depends on your style to a large extent. My first thought is something traditional.... Wooden mantel and pilasters around the fireplace, built in bookcases flanking the fireplace, with perhaps closed cabinets on the bottom the height of the fireplace.... and wood paneling above the fireplace. Any brick that shows after the woodwork, I'd have tiled in a limestone. i agree about higher baseboards and BM cloud white or a "linen" paint colour.
