That looks great! I wished I could share my pictures now but I still have my plants indoors, at least most of them. I grow orchids and from May 15th my balcony is stuffed with orchids, and more orchids. They are all green then, not flowering... as they ones I can grow outdoors have flowers from late fall until the spring.

Maybe you notice I'm a new member here. Reading on these forums for about a year and recently discovered this forum. Trying to get some inspiration for my own balcony.
BTW my profile says I live in CA but I had to choose a state even when I selected the Netherlands as country.

thanks for linking to your flickr page. Beautiful clematis you have there--that deep blue! I'm still figuring out this planning thing and right now, the only blooms I have are the two perennials that returned: dianthus and salvia. I winter sowed lots of things and they seem to be coming along painfully slowly.

Lovely, healthy garden! I started a balcny garden a month ago. It isn't going too well. Most of my plants are shrivelling up. Wonder if I am doing something wrong or whther it's just the Delhi heat--113 F.

Well, I think it's wonderful! It definitely looks like a balcony to me! It's as high as the tree tops down the street, and look how close those buildings are!

Someone posted an interesting link today over at the container forum on what they are doing in Mexico to help those in poverty grow veggies in self watering containers. I may try it with herbs. They take a 5 gallon bucket with no drainage holes, and put one hole about 5" up from the bottom on the side. They fill 4/5 of the bucket with leaves and/or grass cuttings, and the rest with good soil. The water under the drain hole provides humidity for the roots, and keeps the whole thing nice and damp. Evidently it works for certain vegetables. Like the leafy green ones. They didn't have success with tomato or hot pepper plants. They put a dowel in to check humidity.

uh-oh, I have some herbs and a hot pepper plant in self-watering planters I got at Ikea. So far, the pepper seems pretty healthy, thriving even. I hope I don't have the same experience as the people in the Mexico experiment. Keep us updated on your experiences.

I was interested in the SWPs because it's difficult for me to haul all the water I need out onto the porch everydayÂand I keep adding planters. I thought they would help my sanity.

I don't grow veggies, only flowers on my fenced-in patio. I think Picasa only lets you send one pic at a time, so I chose this one.
