Flooring options for a balcony

Hello folks.

I was hoping for a little advice. I have a balcony outside of my master bedroom which is actually the roof of an addition to my house built some years ago. It is covered in regular roofing tiles. A neighbor who worked in roofing once said it would not be good to be walking directly on the shingles, and that this would probably lead to problems like leakage over time. He suggested adding some time of flooring over it to keep this problem from occurring. I am on a tight budget so I am looking into some economical options for some patio flooring. I thought some indoor/outdoor carpet may be a cheap option, but I do not know how good a protection this would offer the roofing material. I also found some rubber mat tiles at Menards which would work, but the cost over covering an area about 180 square feet would be about $450.00! Too rich for my blood! Can anyone suggest some other options? Thanks!
