I always think that anything with wrought iron would look good. You could space the lateral posts (or sticks?) rather wide apart so that it doesn't look like a prison. I don't know how high your fence should be and what its purpose would be. If it is to protect small children, you would have to put the sticks closer together.
A balcony is usually a small area and any "uglier" fence, like chainlink, is not what I would pick. Send a picture.
