I've never actually used the "barnyard tea bags" but, I do use worm castings mixed in with my potting soil (especially for starting seedlings), and brew my own compost tea from a homemade inoculant solution that includes worm castings (which is probably cheaper than buying the premade tea bags, and it's fun and easy. I can give you the "recipe" if you like. Another good organic fertilizer is deodorized fish emulsion (I use Alaska brand, 5-1-1)...but with fish emulsion be careful if using on edibles as there can sometimes be varying levels of mercury in the solution (even if it's approved for organic production). I haven't tried the ones from Lee Valley, but I've been using PlantTea (www.plantea.com) and that seems to work pretty well. I'm a newbie with this organic fertilizer stuff, though, so I don't know how much my opinion is worth.
