Schefflera Bonsai looking ill

I have had a beautiful schefflera bonsai for several years. It has thrived beautifully with very little care and attention. I have not had to prune it since its growth has never been out of its original character. It was professionally potted but has recently looked very lack luster. The soil seems unusual and very dry and dusty. I notice now that the root of the plant is becoming noticeable and the planting wiring is now exposed. I also notice some very small bright green seed-like balls in the soil that may be fertilizer or they may be trouble. It may simply need to be repotted but that seems to be too obvious a solution.

Any suggestions?
