trunk tapering

I bought a ficus microcarpa almost a year ago now (you all probably know). In my case, they just took a tree, cut off the top, and put it in the store for sale. I am now left with a stump with a bunch of knaraly(spelling) branches coming off of it! Is this a case where I would just cut off all the branches and start over with attempting to trunk taper it, or is there a way that I can keep the existing branches? Thank you for any responses!
