fountain solution

We have installed a fountain consisting of a bronze lion's head fastened to a masonry wall, with a tall, glazed trough underneath for the water. Our problem is, instead of the gentle tinkle of splashing water, it sounds more like an elephant relieving itself. We think that if we fix something to break the water's fall, like a rock or a glazed ball, that we would get the effect we're after. What does everyone else think?
