roots

I have purchased a japanese hornbean from a friend of a friend. When I pull on the tree it feels like there is still room in the pot for growth. But I see a large root coming from the soil. It has smaller roots attached to it.What I would like to know is, should I root prune and replant, or wait till next spring? It has plenty of new growth, and some small buds on it.
