Beginner: Help!

I was given my first bonsai, a trident maple for christmas.

As we are approaching autumn, and the real heat of summer is definitely over, I have noticed a few things that have me worried.

Many of the leaves are dying off, and falling. I wasn't too worried initially, thinking that it was the change of season, but the canopy is really thin, and I'm worried that it may be something serious. Also, the foliage that's still there has all turned yellow. I wasn't expecting this kind of colour change this quickly. I would think that the leaves would stay green, gradually going red / orange, and then shed. Worried...

I've been careful not to overwater, and keeping it in the morning sun only, and I've stopped feeding it. I don't know what may be wrong. I hope I'm not murdering it.

Any advise would be great.

thanks. G
