I don't know that I'd want to grow it in the ground.
I know that's the advice for most young trees when you want to put on some girth.
How do I put this............their growth will get out of hand real quick; something along the lines of a willow. Don't be shy about cutting the upper branches back to one node every year. You also can't be shy about root pruning either.(Not as drastic as you can be with a willow though) Keeping lower branches in the beginning to give it taper, but even those will eventually have to be cut back hard if you are going to keep them.

Tough tree and style to do. Pines are easier IMO.

You could have your hands full in 3 years trying to dig up your sequoia, unless it is in some kind of container? I just lost my prize tree- a sequoia about like yours, about 6 years old. Absolutely beautiful little tree, starting to adopt a neat shape and character (and my favorite out of 30 trees). It didn't like the root trimming I gave it, and I think it got too dry just once. BAM. Died. I just bought 2 more seedlings to replace it. They are sensitive at yours' stage of growth. Be careful.

Although I'm no expert, I think Sequoia isn't as good bonsai material as redwood. It is apparently more tempermental. Redwood can (and is) collected for bonsai purposes and can apparently stand quite aggressive root reduction. Large to huge (although huge is a relative thing with this species;-)) specimens can be dug.

Maybe an error on my part, my experience was with Dawn Redwood only. I guess I shouldn't lump similar trees together.

Dawn redwood is very similar to Bald Cypress. Same toughness and appearance. Redwood, Sequoia, Dawn Redwood and Bald cypress are all related though.
