Both sohould be fine on a patio in Tennessee, but give the maple a little shade from the afternoon sun. The crape myrtle should be fine in full sun. Crape myrtle blooms from new wood. The flowers don't reduce in bonsai treatment, so depending on the variety you have, they could look a little strange. Dwarf varieties of Crape are out there that have tiny blooms. Someone posted pics of "bonsaied" dwarf varieties a while back...

you will have to overwinter both of these outdoors. They will not be happy indoors in the winter.
