Al makes the very good point that weed seeds do so well, partly because they are sown in the fall/summer. Some of them even sow themselves in winter as a result of the seed capsules popping off the plants, or falling to the ground when colder, stormier weather comes. Weeds are also generally less fussy plants.

You may want to check out the winter sowing forum. Many seeds will germinate without attention from you in closed but ventilated containers that are sown in winter and left outside. The seeds are not harmed by cold temperatures and "know" when to germinate once it warms up. You do need to plant them out then, but watering twice a day in spells like this is also time-consuming. Winter sown seedlings are remarkably tough. Even flowers that are known not to tolerate transplanting, like poppies, do well with this method.

Yeah, I learned winter sowing just this year and I have tons of sprouts. I already have transplanted 3 types(hollyhock, shasta daisy and rudbeckia irish eyes) few days ago. But I believe that there are some plants that are easier to grow via direct sowing.

Oh, I have another question. What are some techniques we can apply so that moisture can stay longer so that seeds doesn't dry out too quickly? Is it ok to put peat moss on top?
