you give us a cultivar name.. but not the Latin name .. so i have no clue what a 'fringed pink' is .... sounds like a dianthus ... but ...

when i used to sow outdoors.. i would scratch a straight line.. insert a stick plant the seed.. and cross my fingers ... weeds don't grow in straight lines.. so it was easy if ID if 25 seeds sprouted ... once they get some good size ... you can mover them around ... you can also label the stick so you will recall in a month, which is which ...

another way is to dig a hole for a pot.. fill the pot with the native soil ... so that when the plants get to size.. you can break the plants out of the pot ...

I can't answer from my experience, but I'm facing the same question. I figure I'll sow the seeds ASAP after my area's last-frost date. This doesn't mean that the ground will have reached the germination temperature (like 70 F for some seeds). Hopefully the seeds will germinate when the ground reaches the right temperature, and won't suffer harm in the meantime. Down here in Maryland, I expect the ground to warm up pretty fast once spring takes hold.

As for knowing where the seeds fell... I don't plan to move the seedlings, and I'm planting only varieties that are supposed to grow to 2 or 3 feet. So hopefully they'll eventually distinguish themselves from the weeds, as the majority of my weeds don't grow so high.
