Uh...why wouldn't/couldn't we grow petunias from seeds in zone 5?

Mine are growing beautifully on the light cart as I type. Same as any other annual - start at the right time + good seed starting/growing on technique = healthy transplants.

That said, it borderline too late to start petunias indoors for a late May show - though that is dependent, as mine took off like gangbusters once they germinated. Still, even if you planted the seed this week, you're looking at transplant size probably around beginning to mid June (4-6 weeks) - probably better just to buy the transplants at this point. But, you can start them for mid-summer replacement planting, since they get ratty and flowering poops out about mid/late July around these parts - can cut back or plant fresh transplants.

Anyway, I order my seeds from Stokes Seeds. I prefer to order because I want to choose individual colors, most of the flower seeds off the rack are mixes.
