Baby maple trees?

I was just given several baby Japanese maple trees that popped up in my mother's yard, and a bonsai pot. I'm a little unsure of where to even begin with them, as I've never had any bonsai trees before. Do I plant one in the bonsai pot now? Or in a normal pot until it gets bigger? All the baby trees have 2-6 leaves right now.

Any pointers to a good bonsai for beginners resource would be appreciated too.

If they are indeed only seedlings, I suppose you could pop one in a thimble sized pot and call it a mame...
Otherwise, it would be a good idea to stick 'em in the ground for a few years and let them fatten up. While doing so, research all you can about growing JM, and training bonsai. It is not a process to rush, and growing from seed (or seedling) will theoretically take decades to form into a traditional bonsai style.

Though technically any tree living within a shallow pot is a bonsai, it is up to you to decide which direction you wish to take your trees.

Currently, I have no ground to speak of, so flowerpots will have to suffice for fattening them up for the time being. I'll hold off on putting them in the bonsai pot.

Do you have any particular source for researching bonsai training to recommend?
