Finding a Texas Ebony

I am looking for a web page that sells Texas Ebony bonsai trees and can't find any on the web, if some one knows a site to buy one I would be very happy and I am looking for a site where you can buy pots that have a pond in it or if anybody knows of a nursury in the Austin area that would be great too.

Maybe try the trees forum? Its not a common Bonsai subject so its doubtful you will be able to find any that have been bonsaied already. Also, How old are you JBonsai?

Try Dallasbonsai.com. I know they did carry them. Zack

Why would it really matter how old I am. Well I am only 18 and just starting out at this bonsai thing. I think they are really cool and I'm fixing to go off to college in the fall and was just looking for some bonsais to keep at my parents house and maby raise one in the doorm. I was thinking about a fukon tea tree to raise in my doorm.

JB - here I go again raining on a parade (really sorry everyone, but again it's a matter of history, not my personal thing). Dorm rooms are deadly to bonsai - never mind who's running in and out all the time with no regard for your stuff, but you have little or no control over heat, humidity, lighting, etc. and both trees you're thinking of definitely need special conditions, none of which are available in dorms. But if you want to go through what so many others have taken years to find out, go ahead, just be ready to be sorry somewhere down the line. Sounds mean, huh? The intentions are just the opposite, though! Why invest so much time and emotion into something only to see it not make it in the end?

Ficus would probably be the tree to try in the dorm, although you will need to get it a good light, probably have to drop $50 on it at least, and thats not for a nice looking unit, thats for strip lighting that you ducktape above your tree.

I ask about your age only to know, I'm not going to hold it against you, I am myself only 19. Knowing your age lets me gauge just how much you say is the impudent nature of your youth.

Meehan's miniatures online sells small plants very cheap; there's also a very good article in the brooklyn botanical garden's handbook on indoor bonsai about texas ebony -- including a report that one tree grew and bloomed sitting on somebody's desk in an office!

I say give it a try; a couple of young, inexpensive plants are good to start learning on.

Are you in Austin? So am I. Here's your Ebony:

    Scroll down to the bottom.

Jade Bonsai in Wimberly. Chuck and Pat are great people and work a lot with native Texas trees.

I started out wanting to do "indoor" bonsai too. Now all my trees are outside and kicking butt!

Thanks a lot jimshy for the great web site. Now I can get some different kinds of trees and just try and see how they grow, also see if I'm any good at growing bonsais. I am also going to need a new juniper beacouse I keep it inside for about 2 weeks then I just stuck it outside and well almost half of the tree turned brown, so I'm just waiting and seeing if its dead or if its somehow going to bounce back.
