looks like the early stages of a Love-lies-Bleeding A. caudatus too me....my reseedrs have a purplish tinge to the leaves early spring and mature green.

Hello vera in eastern WA,

I did a little more research and Amaranthus cruentus and Amaranthus caudatus are very closely related. So closely related, in fact, that they can be distinguished only by extremely technical and minute characters of the female flowers. When I get the chance, I will examine the tiny flowers of the plant I photographed to determine whether it is Amaranthus cruentus or Amaranthus caudatus.

In the mean time, I'd like to thank you and deejaus for helping me narrow down the identity of this plant.
