I would not consider starting over now. It is still spring and your poppies will soon bloom. More sun would have been better, but they should bloom anyway. The plant is rather rank looking and I prefer to plant them where they do not make too much of a statement. Al

I find the foliage of opium poppies rather attractive. That lovely glaucous tint and the wavy shape help lighten up the garden and make a good contrast with other plants.

I bought a red poppy at a nursery three years ago, and it did not bloom the first spring. It bloomed like crazy last year and has tons of flowers on it this year. I saw a whole field of red poppies near Elizabethtown, Ky, just last Friday and it was breathtaking.

Bettyfb, your poppy would be a perennial type, such as P. orientalis, and not the annual opium poppy that ginnyginny is talking about. They all have beautiful flowers though, for sure.
