Plumb tree chop

I have this native plum, I think it's Prunus americana, not sure though. Anyway, it's in a 5 gallon planter now until next spring when I plan to put it into a large training box.

My question is, would it be ok to cut it down now? I live in zone 8 (subtropical) and we have several more months of good growing weather to go. The tree is about 6 feet tall and about 1 1/2 inch thick trunk. It's very tall & skinny.

There's a low branch a few inches from the base that I want to leave for the new leader.

What would you do? chop it now or wait?
