A barrier would work better.

Can you get some netting or mesh around them?

You can also spray them with hot pepper spray- you can find it at a big box store (it is also used for dogs to keep them from licking/chewing things). That should help. Otherwise a live trap may be another option so you could relocate him/her far away!

Actually, according to many people here in the gardenweb, bloodmeal works quite well as a repellent. You can also make your own hot pepper spray with hot sauce or cayenne pepper mixed with water. I'd use both strategies...so that the rabbit associates the smell with the hot pepper taste.

And before even thinking about trapping the rabbit(s) and relocating them to another location, check with your local laws to see if such a practice is legal. It ISN'T in much of the US, but Canada might be different.

I used a generic version of Liquid Fence that I purchased at Lowes and it seemed to work fairly well. However, after I sprayed it directly on the zinnia leaves, they developed a bad case of mildew. While my zinnias usually succumb to mildew later in the season, this was much earlier, probably within a few weeks of planting, so I am blaming the spray residue. This year I am trying to spray AROUND the plants rather than ON them.

Are you sure the mildew wasn't just the spray residue? Some residues look whitish like mildew.

At first I thought it was the residue, as I had noticed that on some other plants I sprayed, but it kept getting worse and worse until the leaves all shriveled up like they do with a really bad case of mildew. Since spraying around seems to work as well as spraying on, I'm going to stick with that just to be safe.
