If it were me, I would give it a try. I live in Louisville, Ky and I too planted Sunflowers last year at the end of June and I had beautiful Sunflowers in September.

I just planted Russian Mammoth seeds a week and a half ago, and they are up already. Like Betty, I expect they will bloom in August- or early September.

I just read this from an article from Purdue: "In temperate regions, sunflower requires approximately 11 days from planting to emergence, 33 days from emergence to head visible, 27 days from head visible to first anther, 8 days from first to last anther, and 30 days from last anther to maturity. Cultivar differences in maturity are usually associated with changes in vegetative period before the head is visible."

Mine already reached its emergence stage, so it looks like I should see the flowers in 2 months. :-)

My sunflower went from first visible bud to open flower in 15 days

I'm in zone 6 and I started mine in late May. I can now see the flower head forming.
