why not try with half your seed ...

i dont know why they need to be covered with soil ... my free range seeds never are ...

though you have enough season left .. for a late show.. the real issue is whether you can nurse babes thru the heat of summer ... and that is where you might fail ... when its little roots are a half inch into the soil. and every afternoon is near 100... at that tiny size.. its usually early may.. cool.. damp.. etc ...

why not try a few in a pot.. that you can give TLC to ... ??

never learned anything.. w/o trying .. etc.. do both.. and let us know ...

ps: i am not sure they will like heavy peat media... something tells me they are a high drainage plant .... maybe the word CA in their name.. lol ...

I don't think so; they grow and flower fairly fast. Try it. I LOVE mine. they self-seeded and I have a ton of them in one area this year. I am planting them everywhere now because I like them so much and they self-seed. they are much easier to transplant than regular poppies too. I moved a bunch of mine and most of them are doing well.

Darn poppies, WHY are the regular ones so hard to transplant, even when you get all the tap root. I have a hard time with those, but the Calif. ones are MUCH EASIER. Good luck.
