It's a variety - exactly which one I don't know - of "spoon tip" chrysanthemum. You tend to see these mostly in culture for florists, but I'm sure they'd be available as pot/garden plants whenever mums show up for sale in the garden centers, etc. in your area.

There's lots on information on growing from seed by Googling 'growing chrysanthemums from seed' - but it seems like a lot of work. Easier to buy a plant.

Many mums that you get in a florist's bouquet won't grow well except in a green house, so don't be disappointed if they don't do well for you. But I have grown mums with spooned petals, but the bolssoms weren't that large.
Give it a go....they come in many colors, and start easily from cuttings.

I have an idea for you: if you like those spider mums, try growing Cleome, which is also called spider flower. It comes in shades of pinks and purples. They are not exactly the same as your mums, but they have a similar "feel" to them and most of all, they are completely foolproof plants to grow. Just Google the name Cleome and look at the pictures and you will see if that would be something you would like. Here it is: {{gwi:12859}}

Shapiro, they also come in white. You can get them in different heights also. My favorite is the 'Queen' series. They get up to 5 ft. There's a dwarf series also..I think they get about 2 ft high.
Chilipete, these are really easy to grow. I do stake my tall ones, but the shorter ones don't need it.

Why let that stop you? For all you know you might succeed famously! As far as the kids being disappointed if it doesn't work out... there is nothing wrong with their learning that we don't always succeed at what we try to do. That is simply life. It doesn't mean we should not even make the attempt. I don't know if you kids are old enough to grasp the concept of doing an "experiment" If they are that would be another way to approach it.
