It all depends on what kind they are. They should send up the first bud fairly quickly (as you are seeing now) and then continue to grow and get taller. Last year, some of mine (NOID) bloomed at 3' but grew to over 6' in the fall.

Thanks. This is the first time my sunflowers made it out of the ground never mind a bloom! Like I said, I'm experimenting with bird seed so I'm not sure what I have but it's good to know that they will probably get taller. Here's hoping they get nice and bushy too. I have to say this route was way cheaper than from a package of seeds.

Yes, but the bonus of buying a packet of seeds is that you know with some certainty just what kind of plant you'll end up with. You should see all of the spectacular sunflower varieties!

By the way, a couple of years ago, a few sunflowers germinated in a pile of soil behind our shed. They grew to well over 6 or 7 feet tall, with huge heads on them. We aren't sure how the seeds got there, but we're guessing they were planted by squirrels or chipmunks.

and make sure they have enough fertilizer, they are heavy feeders. Some years ago I grew some tall single headed ones on rather poor soil. After a while I noticed that they had far too little leaves and just dumped some fert on them (+watering). Soon they sproutet far bigger leaves and made a growth boost.
