Usually they are put in baskets or pots. Because of their trailing habit they fill out a pot nicely and droop down the sides. You can put them in the ground if you have the room for them to ramble. They are rather more expensive than regular petiunias, which I prefer in beds or borders.

So what exactly is a "supertunia"?

I bought one in a hanging basket today--light pink edged with dark pink. Quite an eye-catcher.

Supertunia is just a brand name for a certain variety of trailing petunia much like the waves or ramblers. They are all varieties of trailing petunia.

And supposidly some Supertunias are more heat tolerant then normal petunias. I've never had any Petunia last much beyond mid July. Between the heat and the cabbage loopers they are usually toast by then. However, this spring I researched the Supertunia "Bubblegum Pink" and saw that it was rated at one trial garden in the south (Texas A&M?) as a 5 out of 5 for heat tolerance. I put mine in a hanging basket and it's still doing well (hot and humid for the past month-HI=100 today) and is a cascade of nice medium pink flowers. Very showy. But the catapillars haven't shown up yet, so it still may only last me until mid July. Depends on whether I decide to spray for them or not when they do show up.
