put the bag over the flower.. some peeps use old nylons.... twist tie the bottom.. and let them mature ... ripen and dry right on the plant ...

nick.. you have to start learning the latin... if you goggle birds eye... all you will get is frozen pea recipes.. and that is why.. when you want real good info.. you need to drop the common names.. and go with the latin ..

ps: if you have a named variety ... you might want to google. .and find out if they are fertile... or sterile ... before wasting too much effort....

I second Ken's suggestion to place bags over the spent flowers. I use "wedding bags", which are woven nylon or tulle with a drawstring opening. That way you can leave the seeds on the plant as long as you need, and the birds won't carry them off. Do wait to cover them until the flower starts to fade, since you want to be sure the bugs had time to do their pollinating job. The bags come in several sizes and are available from wedding supply companies online. If you have a gardening friend, you could share an order. I have more bags than I know what to do with.
