This kind of amaranthus?

They were actually a little too tall for the space I had when I planted them once. I want to say they got close to three feet tall... and I'd expected half that.

I don't remember any re-seeding; then again, I may well have weeded them out (I tend to be extra-tidy in the early spring).

Yes, deeje, like the picture, only brighter and darker: but same kind of pattern. 3 feet would be great! I want it next to some red daylilies.

This is not the one with the trailing fuzzy red things; I think that one is called "Love lies bleeding". The store had a lot of those; this one was mixed in with them; but probably the last one they had left, considering it's June. I think those are neat-looking (the trail-y ones), but I don't have a great place to put one. The upright form of this one I really like, as well as the flaming colors.

Google Amaranthus 'Illumination' - it might be what you have (rather than the basic tricolor). Another good one is A. 'Early Splendor': maroon foliage, gradating to a hot pink centre.

I have heard it called Joseph's Coat. I had one a couple years ago, and it did not self seed, but it is easy to collect seeds from. I have about 12 that I started from seed this year that are about 4 inches tall.

'Joseph's Coat' is just a common name for Amaranthus tricolor, in the same way that "Love Lies Bleeding" is a common name for the Amaranthus forms that have tassels of flowers. It's not a cultivar name.
