Help with sunflowers

My girlfried planted I believe they are called Gigantic Sunflowers about 6 months ago from seeds. She has been in the garden everyday since checking on the progress. Out of of a couple dozen they range from 3ft to maybe 7ft tall. Just recenlty at least half of them have been eaten about half way up the stock/stem and have fell over. Not sure if it's insects or squirells.

Is this a common problem, and what do some of you suggest? I hope we can save the ones that are still standing.

When you find sunflowers that seem to have been chewed and have fallen over, usually cut worms are to blame.
However, if there were flowers and seeds forming, a squirrel might have taken matters into hos own hands to bring the treat down to his level.
Were there flowers and were they eaten?

Yes most of them have bloomed but I don't think the flowers were eaten. So maybe it's cut worms? Also I do remember seeing a couple that did not have flower that have fell over...

The flowers looked fine, it looks like it maybe insects/bugs.
