empty sunflower seeds

Last time I grew sunflowers, I noticed many of the seeds shells were rather thin, and when I went to crack them, many of the seeds inside were either very thin, or even non-existent... just a papery film inside it. Has anyone seen this before? Any idea what causes this? I am growing more this year and would like to avoid that.

did you grow a named variety???

for some reason they may have been sterile?? .. which is one of the possibilities.. in growing un-named seedligns...

the only other option is lack of fertilization ... for whatever reason ... like extreme high heat at that particular moment ...

Yeah, the heat may be the culprit. Being here in Texas it was probably consistently over 100 when that happened.
I had bought a package of "Mammoth" sunflower.
